What the Building Costs
Nora published both repair figures and watched optimism become arithmetic.
Priya argued for the phased plan. Cal refused to certify it without permanent access to Daniel's lane. Daniel offered the lane and his shares if Nora abandoned the cooperative and sold to a national arts operator willing to keep Priya as manager.
"You keep offering everyone a future you selected," Nora said.
"I am trying to protect jobs."
"Then release the lane without controlling the owner."
He would not.
Campaign pledges fell by £34,000 that afternoon. Two renters canceled. Honesty had a cost and did not congratulate Nora for paying it.
Theo offered to negotiate with Daniel. Nora refused. She asked Lena to join her instead.
At the family table, Lena placed her camera in the center but left it off.
"I am not translating," she said. "If either of you tells me what the other one means, I leave."
Nora and Daniel spoke directly. The lane, the restaurant loan, the marriage, the years Nora had made his confidence look mutual.
Daniel finally admitted Malcolm had already borrowed against the purchase option. If the community bid won, Mercer Urban might collapse - and take Theo's guarantee with it.
Nora understood why Theo had stayed.
The building and the man were tied to the same debt.
