The Share He Let Go
Daniel released his eighteen-percent stake for its original cost, not the inflated development value.
He signed in the Lantern lobby while restaurant employees watched. The sale weakened Mercer Urban's control and left Daniel with a smaller expansion.
"I kept waiting for you to make my choices reasonable," he told Nora. "Then I blamed you when you stopped."
"I kept doing it because being needed felt safer than being known."
They did not hug. The honesty needed no sentimental proof.
Lena left for the airport after the signing. Nora carried one bag to the taxi and did not ask for daily calls.
"Send me the film when it is yours," she said.
"Send me the Lantern when it is everyone's."
The taxi turned the corner. Nora cried beside a parking meter until Priya brought tissues and refused to call the moment beautiful.
Inside, Theo and the cooperative solicitor had found one route through the accelerated debt. If Theo surrendered his partnership stake before the council vote, the guarantee would attach to Mercer Urban alone.
He would lose the firm, his income, and any claim on the work that saved the building.
"Does Malcolm know?" Nora asked.
"Not yet," Theo said.
For the first time, he had brought her the choice before making it.
