Her First Date After Forever

Six months later, Nora arrived late to a date she had booked herself.

The Lantern had reopened that afternoon. Priya chaired the cooperative. Cal ran facilities and complained about every celebratory balloon near a smoke detector. Former Mercer employees worked from the restored balcony offices under their own company name.

Nora remained events director by contract, subject to review and gloriously unable to overrule anyone alone.

Theo waited at a small restaurant across the river. His preservation practice had three projects, no inherited debt, and a desk covered in unpaid invoices.

"How was opening night?" he asked.

"A child vomited in row G, the mayor mispronounced cooperative, and Daniel's food sold out. Perfect."

They talked about Lena's film, Malcolm's disciplinary hearing, Ben's new relationship, and nothing that required either of them to become symbolic.

After dinner they returned to the Lantern. Theo stopped at the side door.

"Are we allowed inside?"

Nora held up her staff key. "I checked the policy."

In the dark auditorium, the restored ceiling caught the aisle lights. Theo offered his hand. Nora took it because she wanted to.

Later, when the locked doors made privacy explicit and his mouth found hers again, she stated what she wanted without converting it into a joke. He listened. The rest belonged behind a closed door and to no campaign.

Near midnight Nora stood alone on the stage while Theo checked the projection booth. The room no longer needed her to rescue it. Her daughter did not need her to stay. Her former husband did not need her to make his choices kind.

The freedom was quieter than applause.

Theo called from the back, "Ready?"

Nora looked at the exit, the screen, and the man waiting without deciding for her.

"Yes," she said, and this time the word was entirely hers.
