Ch. 5 - The Balcony Door

Chapter 5

The Balcony Door

Malcolm denied knowing why his father erased the balcony, then produced photographs proving he had opened it six months earlier.

The public meeting turned before Nora reached the second slide. A reporter projected Malcolm's images: the brass door, the intact seats, Theo standing in the aisle with a measuring laser.

Theo had not merely heard about the space. He had entered it.

"You said Malcolm told you the floor was gone," Nora said.

"He did. The photographs were taken from the threshold. We were ordered not to cross."

"You let me believe you had never seen the door."

"Yes."

The room disliked his answer less than Nora did. It sounded honest because it was concise.

Malcolm stepped to the microphone. "My brother is helping this campaign to manage professional exposure. Mercer Urban remains the only bidder capable of making the building safe."

Priya displayed Cal's independent test results. The floor was sound. The erased balcony had lowered the valuation and made demolition appear rational.

Donors began withdrawing from Mercer's side of the hall.

Nora could have used the moment to absolve Theo and strengthen the campaign. Instead she said, "He concealed what he knew. We will use his documents, not his innocence."

Afterward, Theo found her alone above the dark auditorium.

"That cost us money," he said.

"It bought us trust."

"Do you trust me?"

"I trust you to tell the truth after I catch you."

His expression tightened.

Nora handed him the photographs. "You have until breakfast to become more useful than that."

At midnight he emailed the full Mercer project archive. A memo showed Daniel had requested the balcony remain excluded from valuation.
