Her First Date After Forever

Ch. 9 - Everyone Has an Opinion

Chapter 9

Everyone Has an Opinion

The photograph raised £19,000 and cost Nora her daughter's cooperation.

"I am not editing a film where your love life saves a building," Lena said. She had arrived with three hard drives and the expression she inherited from both parents when they were done being reasonable.

Nora wanted to say there was no love life. The phrase would have been false in a way Lena could hear.

"What film will you make?"

"One where workers, renters, and volunteers exist when you leave the frame."

Priya applauded from the aisle.

At lunch a property philanthropist offered £200,000 on two conditions: Theo left the project and the campaign used Nora's date series in national advertising.

The room divided instantly. Priya wanted the money. Cal wanted Theo's design. Lena wanted Nora to reject being packaged. Nora wanted five minutes without representing womanhood after divorce.

Theo arrived before the vote. He read the offer and said, "Take it."

"You are not allowed to make my clean decisions for me."

"This one is arithmetic."

"It is ownership."

She called the donor and declined both conditions. The pledge disappeared from the campaign total while everyone watched.

Then Nora posted the full reason online, including Theo's conflict and the donor's proposed control.

Small donations began arriving before she put down the phone.

Lena switched on her camera. "Say why you did it."

Nora looked directly into the lens. "Because a rescue that requires silence is another sale."

Across town, Malcolm revoked Theo's access to every Mercer file and changed the firm's locks.
