Ch. 15 - The Ambush

Chapter 15

The Ambush

The fundraiser was a mistake on purpose.

That was the only way Mia could explain it later.

Lucia insisted the family appear in public while the story around Owen and the ledger was still unstable. Silvio agreed too quickly. Dante agreed because refusing would have looked like panic. Mia attended because staying hidden would have made her an easier target than showing up under his arm.

The hotel ballroom glittered with money trying very hard to look legitimate.

Mia stood beside Dante in a deep green dress that made her feel like she had dressed for a different kind of war. He looked almost bored, which was the closest he came to calm when the room had too many exits and too many eyes.

Then Silvio stepped up to the microphone.

He smiled at the room, then at Dante.

"Before we announce the evening's donors," he said, "I think we should address the rumor that brought us here."

The room changed.

Dante's hand touched Mia's back once, a warning and a promise both.

Silvio continued. "There has been a theft. There has been an outside woman. There has been confusion about where family loyalty sits."

The room was listening now.

Mia realized, one breath too late, that this was the ambush.

Two men moved at the side door. Enzo saw them first. Dante saw them a beat later. The next few seconds shattered into motion: a shout, a glass breaking, a bodyguard lunging, guests screaming.

Silvio had planned a public collapse.

Dante refused to give it to him.

He stepped to the microphone, took it from Silvio's hand with a force that made the older man stare, and said, "Anyone who wants to know who stole from this family can look at the ledger we found in my office."

Silvio's smile vanished.

Dante kept going. "Anyone who wants to know who moved money through the charity route can ask why my cousin has been meeting men who do not work for us."

Mia stared.

He was doing it. In front of everyone.

"And anyone who wants to know why Mia Hart is here," Dante said, voice steady as stone, "should ask me why I brought my future wife to a room full of people I no longer trust."

Silvio moved first.

Not toward Dante.

Toward Mia.

Dante intercepted him so fast the movement was almost invisible. The two men collided hard enough to knock the microphone stand sideways. Enzo and the guards surged in.

Mia saw the shape of the trap at last: Silvio wanted her frightened, visible, and alone.

Instead she lifted her chin and looked directly at the man who had underestimated her from the start.

"You know my mother's name," she said.

Silvio's face changed.

That was enough.

Lucia, from the side of the room, went very still.

And just like that, the family split around the truth.
