Chapter 17

The Threshold

The final ledger sat between them on the desk like an accusation that had finally run out of places to hide.

Dante had spread the copied pages out under the office light while Mia, Owen, and Enzo watched the routes line up with the names. There was no grace left in it now. No family myth. Just numbers, dates, and the shape of a betrayal that had been built slowly enough to pass for routine.

"This is enough?" Mia asked.

Dante nodded once. "Enough to break him."

"And the rest of the family?"

"They'll decide whether they want to stand with the truth or with the lie."

Owen made a low sound that might have been approval.

Mia looked at the pages again, then at Dante. "What happens after?"

That question had been haunting the edges of every room for days. It sounded different now because they were finally at the edge of something that could not be postponed.

Dante pushed his chair back and stood.

"After?" he repeated.

He crossed the room, stopped in front of her, and reached into the inside pocket of his jacket.

Mia's breath caught.

The ring was simple. No family crest. No showmanship. Just a narrow band of gold that looked less like ownership than intent.

He held it in his palm but did not take her hand.

"I am not asking because I need the family to believe it," he said. "I'm not asking because the story needs a better ending. I'm asking because I want the next thing with you, and I want it without any debt attached to it."

Mia looked at the ring, then up at him.

"You really think I care about the debt now?"

"I think you care about whether you get to choose."

The answer was immediate.

She did not take the ring yet.

Instead she asked, "If I say no?"

"Then I will still help you bury Silvio."

"If I say yes?"

"Then I will still help you bury Silvio."

That finally brought a smile to her mouth.

She held his gaze, and for the first time since the rain at the club, the choice did not feel like a trap.

"Then ask me properly," she said.

Dante's face changed. Not much. Enough.

He lowered himself to one knee in front of her.

The room went very quiet.

"Mia Hart," he said, voice steady but not easy, "will you marry me because you want to, and not because I saved you, threatened you, or put your brother in the same room with the truth?"

Owen made a choked sound behind them.

Mia looked down at Dante on one knee and felt the full shape of the life she had walked into by accident.

This time, it was not an accident.

"Yes," she said.

The answer landed like a door opening.
