Chapter 12
What the Cameras Missed
Wren had learned that a crisis became most treacherous after everyone thought they understood it. In the bustling heart of the city, the aftermath of the abandoned wedding loomed large, a chaotic scene filled with purpose and urgency. People dashed around with clipboards and phones, their eyes focused but their expressions blank, as if the official narrative hanging in the air was a truth they had all agreed to accept. Wren could feel the tension in the air, a tangible pressure that intensified whenever someone sidestepped a direct question.
Luca stood beside her, close enough that their shoulders almost brushed. He didn’t touch her—a deliberate choice that allowed Wren to gauge her own feelings. She appreciated the space he gave her, an unspoken acknowledgment of the distance they both needed to navigate.
"They recover hidden evidence through the setting's concrete details," Wren murmured, her voice barely above a whisper, the noise of the city fading to a dull roar around them.
"Then we make them show us where it leads," Luca replied, his tone steady, resolute. His eyes were sharp, scanning their surroundings as if searching for the clues that others had overlooked.
They honed in on the details that everyone else had dismissed: a time stamp that didn’t align, a misplaced access card, a discrepancy in a chart that didn’t match the person who authored it. June had always warned Wren that the truth wouldn’t come as a neatly packaged confession; it would emerge as something ordinary that someone had desperately tried to obscure.
As the next door swung open, Wren felt a chill run down her spine. The cost of being right settled heavily in her stomach. The proof could save their lives, but it also had the potential to drag their loved ones into peril. Luca noticed her hesitation, his gaze piercing through the layers of her resolve. He placed his hand at the small of her back, warmth seeping through the fabric of her shirt, but then he held still, allowing her to decide how to respond.
"Tell me what you need," he said, his voice low, filled with an urgency that made Wren’s heart race.
For the first time since the disaster had begun to unfold, Wren didn’t respond with a plan. She looked into his eyes, feeling the weight of all the unsaid words and the trust that had been built between them over months of navigating chaos together. Luca was giving away control, and it terrified her. But instead of retreating into a strategy, she made a choice—an honest one. She stepped forward, ready to face whatever lay ahead with him by her side.
The room was dimly lit, filled with the hum of electronic equipment and the flicker of monitors displaying cryptic data. As they moved deeper into the space, the footage paused on a face Wren knew all too well. The image was grainy but unmistakable—a flash from a memory she wished she could erase.
“Is that…?” Wren’s voice faltered, a mix of disbelief and dread pooling in her gut.
“Yeah,” Luca said, his expression darkening as he leaned closer to the screen. “That’s Marcus.”
Wren’s mind raced, recalling the ominous conversations and the way Marcus had always seemed too invested in her life, too eager to insert himself into her world. “What is he doing here?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
“Looks like he’s been in the middle of this all along,” Luca replied, his brow furrowing as he scrolled through frames. Each click of the mouse felt like a countdown, a reminder of how close they were to uncovering something dangerous.
“We need to find out what he knows,” Wren insisted, her heart pounding as fear and resolve coursed through her. “If he’s involved, then everything we’ve been trying to piece together could be part of a bigger plan.”
“Agreed,” Luca said, his eyes narrowing. “But we have to be careful. If he’s in this deep, we can’t underestimate him.”
She nodded, her mind racing with possibilities, but the thought of confronting Marcus sent a shiver down her spine. “We can’t go in blind. We need to gather more evidence before we make any moves.”
“Right,” Luca said, his demeanor shifting as he focused on the task at hand. “Let’s check the logs for any recent activity that could connect him to the wedding or the people involved. It’s time to dig deeper.”
As they began sifting through the data, Wren’s thoughts drifted to the people they were fighting for, the loved ones who were unknowingly caught in the crossfire. She couldn’t let them get hurt. They had to stay one step ahead.
But as Wren glanced back at the paused image of Marcus, an unsettling feeling settled in her chest. Whatever game he was playing, she could feel the stakes rising. The final piece of the puzzle was just out of reach, and the clock was ticking.
