Chapter 14
No Safe Way Home
Wren had learned that a crisis became most dangerous after everyone decided they understood it. The city buzzed with a frantic energy, a stark contrast to the eerie calm that had settled over the abandoned wedding venue just hours earlier. People rushed around with clipboards, phones glued to their ears, each of them peddling a version of the narrative they had collectively agreed upon. Wren could feel the tension in the air, thick enough to cut through. Every time someone sidestepped a direct question, it was as if the unspoken truth pressed against her, suffocating.
Luca stood beside Wren, his presence a steady anchor in the chaos. He didn’t touch her, respecting the unspoken barrier, allowing her to choose the distance. The tension crackled between them, a tangible reminder of the choices looming ahead.
“A loved one is taken, harmed, or coerced; the protagonist chooses action over escape,” Wren muttered, her voice low and filled with urgency.
“Then we make them show us where it leads,” Luca replied, his eyes narrowing with fierce determination.
They moved through the maze of hastily assembled desks and frantic agents, following the thread that everyone else had overlooked: a time stamp, an access card that didn’t belong to anyone registered, and a line in a report that felt out of place. June had warned her the truth wouldn’t arrive neatly wrapped in a confession; it would appear as an anomaly, something that screamed for attention but was quickly buried under the weight of indifference.
Wren’s heart raced as they approached the next closed door. She could almost taste the danger that lay beyond it. The proof could save them, but it could also drag their loved ones into the line of fire. Luca’s gaze met hers, and in that moment, he understood the silent calculation she was making. His hand found its way to the small of her back, warm and steady. Just as quickly, it stilled, a reminder of the precarious balance they were maintaining.
“Tell me what you need,” he said, his voice low and steady, a lifeline in the storm.
Wren hesitated, a rush of emotion swelling within her. For the first time since the disaster began, she found herself without a plan to offer. She looked up at him, searching his face for reassurance, for strength. The weight of her choices loomed large, but the truth was, moving forward with him felt like the only option that mattered.
“Let’s just keep moving,” she finally whispered, her voice trembling with a mix of fear and resolve.
The voice on the line crackled as Wren fumbled for her phone, anxiety prickling at the back of her neck. It offered her one choice, a single direction, and waited for her response. The air felt electric, the world narrowing down to this moment.
“What if it’s a trap?” Wren asked, glancing around as if the walls were closing in on them.
Luca’s grip on her elbow tightened, grounding her. “Then we’re ready for it. We’ve come too far to turn back now.”
Wren swallowed hard, nodding. She could feel the weight of their decision settle between them, heavy yet liberating. She pressed the phone against her ear, every heartbeat echoing in her mind as she steeled herself for whatever was about to unfold.
“Hello?” A voice on the other end was smooth, deceptively calm. “I assume you’ve found something interesting.”
“Who is this?” Wren demanded, her heart racing.
“Someone who knows what you’re looking for,” the voice replied, a hint of amusement woven through the words. “But I need to know you’re serious.”
Luca leaned closer, his breath warm against her ear as he whispered, “Stay sharp. They might be watching.”
Wren’s mind raced, piecing together the fragments of their investigation. “We need to meet,” she said, her voice steady despite the tremor of dread in her stomach. “We know about the access card.”
“Good. I’ll send you the location,” the voice responded, almost too easily. “But be warned: if you bring anyone else, the deal’s off.”
As the call ended, Wren lowered her phone, dread pooling in the pit of her stomach. “They’re playing with fire,” she murmured.
“Then we’ll need to be careful,” Luca said, his brow furrowing. “We can’t put anyone else at risk.”
Wren nodded, but the weight of their choices loomed larger than ever. She could feel the ground shifting beneath them, a dangerous game unfolding. They were on the cusp of something monumental, and deep down, she knew they weren’t the only players at the table.
“Let’s go,” she said, taking a deep breath, resolve hardening her stance. They stepped back into the chaos of the city, the stakes rising with every stride.
