Chapter 9
Close Enough to Hear Him Breathe
Wren had learned that a crisis became most dangerous after everyone believed they understood it. The bustling city felt alive around them, but it was a false vibrancy. People hurried past, clutching clipboards, their phones pressed to their ears, each absorbed in their own version of the same twisted narrative. In the aftermath of the abandoned wedding, the official story had congealed too quickly, a flimsy facade that Wren sensed was ready to shatter. She could feel the tension in the air each time a passerby skirted a direct question, their eyes darting away as if avoiding her gaze meant dodging the truth.
Next to her, Luca stood with an air of calm that contradicted the urgency surrounding them. He didn’t reach out to touch her, a deliberate choice that made Wren acutely aware of their proximity. The space between them felt electric, charged with unspoken words and unresolved feelings.
“The leads make a risky investigation move and share an escalating physical moment,” Wren murmured, her voice barely rising above the clamor of the busy street.
“Then we make them show us where it leads,” Luca replied, his tone steady, but Wren could see the fire in his eyes.
They had latched onto a detail overlooked by everyone else: a time stamp from the security footage, an access card that had been misplaced, and a line in a report that contradicted its author. June had warned Wren that the truth would not arrive as a confession; it would come in the form of something ordinary that had been twisted out of shape.
As they moved through the building, the sterile scent of cleaning supplies mixed with the faint aroma of coffee from the break room. Wren felt the weight of their investigation pressing down on her. She had known the risks of digging deeper, but the stakes had never felt as high as they did now. When the door swung open ahead, an unsettling chill crept down her spine. The proof they sought could save them, but it could also ensnare the people they loved in danger.
Luca noticed her hesitation. His hand found the small of her back, warm and grounding, but he held it there without pressure. “Tell me what you need,” he said, his voice low but firm, enough to draw her back from the brink of uncertainty.
Wren opened her mouth to respond, but the words faltered on her lips. The plan had always been clear in her mind, but now, faced with Luca's earnest gaze, she found herself at a crossroads. She could feel the control slipping away, the carefully constructed walls around her emotions starting to crumble. Instead of a strategy, she made the only honest choice available: to keep moving forward with him, whatever the cost.
They stepped into the next room, and the fluorescent lights flickered ominously above them, casting long shadows along the walls. The room was cluttered with file cabinets and half-empty boxes, remnants of what had once been a busy office. As they sifted through the disarray, Wren’s heart raced, a mixture of adrenaline and the thrill of the hunt coursing through her veins.
“Look here,” Luca said, pointing to a folder that had been carelessly shoved to the back of a cabinet. The label was barely legible, but the urgency in his voice made Wren lean closer. She pulled it out, her hands trembling slightly as she opened it.
Inside, a series of documents revealed a web of connections that tied back to the wedding and the chaos that had followed it. “These names,” Wren whispered, her pulse quickening as she scanned the pages. “They’re linked to—”
A sudden crash echoed from the hallway, followed by hurried footsteps. Wren’s heart dropped. “We need to go,” she urged, glancing back at Luca.
But before they could make a move, her phone buzzed violently against the desk. The screen lit up with a single, urgent word: RUN.
Panic surged through her veins. “Luca, we have to—”
The door burst open, and two figures stepped into the room, their expressions dark and determined. Wren’s breath hitched in her throat as she caught sight of the menacing glint of something metallic in one of their hands.
“Wren,” Luca said, his voice low and steady, “on my count.”
As the tension snapped, Wren felt the familiar thrill of danger; the room felt smaller, the shadows deeper. She nodded, adrenaline pooling in her stomach, ready to follow him into the chaos.
