Ch. 10 - Promised Before The Accident

Chapter 10

Promised Before The Accident

Victor Vale cried before Elena asked the first question.

That had always been his gift: grief as misdirection.

They met in the rear dining room of a hotel Adrian owned but did not advertise. Mara chose the room. Adrian waited outside because Elena asked him to, and because he knew the difference between protection and possession when someone named it clearly.

"Noah's name is on a shell company," Elena said.

Victor pressed both hands over his face. "I didn't know they would use him."

No denial. No confusion.

Elena felt something inside her go very quiet.

"What did you sign?"

"I was trying to save us."

"What did you sign?"

He looked older than he had at the chapel. Not remorseful. Used up.

"Celeste came to me three months ago. She knew about the investor funds. She said if I cooperated, no one would go to prison."

"Cooperated how?"

"Introductions. Old access codes. Some identity confirmations."

Elena's hand curled around the edge of the table. "Mine."

Victor did not answer.

"You gave her my identity."

"She said it was legal positioning. A marriage arrangement if Adrian needed-"

"If Adrian needed a wife while unconscious?"

Victor flinched.

Outside the frosted glass door, a shadow shifted. Adrian, still there. Still not entering.

Elena held her father in the full force of her attention and watched him shrink under it.

"Was I promised before the accident?"

Victor's face changed.

There it was. The thing he had hoped she would not ask.

"Elena," he whispered.

"Answer me."

He looked toward the door, as if Adrian might save him from the daughter he had sold.

"Yes," Victor said. "The papers were drafted before the explosion."

Elena stood.

The door opened before she touched it.

Adrian was on the other side, his expression stripped clean of everything except comprehension.
