Chapter 14

The Wife Who Could Vote

By morning, Elena owned three percent of Adrian's life.

That was how Mara explained it while sliding legal documents across the breakfast table. The medical proxy, forged or not, had activated a temporary trust clause. Until Adrian's doctors certified full recovery, his spouse held emergency voting rights on restricted transfers.

"They forged power into your hands," Mara said.

Elena looked at Adrian.

He looked tired enough to be dangerous.

"Can I block Grant?"

"You can block the fund transfer," Mara said. "You can demand audit review. You can force a board delay."

"And the second clause?" Adrian asked.

Mara did not answer.

Elena saw it. "There is always a second clause."

They went to the emergency board session at noon.

Celeste wore white. Elena wore black. The press outside the building turned that into symbolism before the elevator reached the top floor.

Grant opened with concern. Liquidity. Stability. Adrian's health. Words arranged to make theft sound kind.

Elena waited until the vote.

"No."

The room turned.

Grant's smile did not move. "Elena, perhaps you don't understand-"

"I understand the proxy you forged gives me temporary voting authority. I understand the transfer routes fifteen million dollars to a shell company in my brother's name. I understand you expected me to be too frightened to read."

Adrian's eyes stayed on Grant.

"Vote blocked," Elena said.

For the first time since she had met him, Grant looked genuinely angry.

Celeste stood. "The proxy also contains a survivorship clause."

Adrian's face changed before Elena understood.

"Mother," he said.

Celeste ignored him. Her gaze rested on Elena like a hand around a throat.

"If Adrian is declared permanently incompetent, his spouse remains legally protected. If he is declared recovered, all protections expire."

Elena understood then.

Her safety depended on proving her husband was still broken.
