Ch. 16 - Before The Kiss

Chapter 16

Before The Kiss

The storm trapped them in the east wing with no power and too much truth.

Mara had gone to check the exterior cameras. Celeste was in the city. Grant was publicly charming donors while privately trying to route money through Elena's brother. For once, the house held only weather.

Elena stood at the window of the prepared bedroom and watched rain turn the lawn silver.

"They chose everything correctly," she said.

Adrian leaned against the doorframe. "The room."

"My shampoo. My size. My color palette. Even the robe." She laughed without humor. "I used to think being known would feel less like being catalogued."

"This is not being known."

She turned.

He had not entered the room. That mattered. In a house where everyone crossed boundaries like inheritance, Adrian stayed at thresholds until invited.

"What is it?"

"Surveillance."

"And being known?"

His eyes moved over her face, not greedily, not clinically. Carefully. As if the answer could bruise.

"Knowing when not to step closer."

Elena's breath changed.

She hated how badly she wanted him to fail his own definition.

"I'm tired," she said. "Of being useful."

That brought him into the room.

One step. Then another. Slow enough that she could stop him with a word.

She did not.

He stopped close, rainlight on his cheek, pain and restraint fighting across his face.

"You are not useful to me," he said.

"Liar."

"Necessary, then."

"That's worse."

His hand lifted and stopped beside her jaw, not touching.

Elena leaned the smallest distance into the question.

A knock struck the door.

Adrian's hand dropped.

Mara opened without waiting, face flat with bad news.

"Noah Vale is missing."
