The Relapse Announcement
Adrian traded the board position in a conference room with six lawyers watching.
Not the company. Not the truth. One temporary seat, one emergency authority, enough to give Grant what he thought he wanted while Mara's team found the maintenance room in Queens.
Elena hated every second of it.
Noah was released at 4:42 p.m.
He called her at 4:47 and said, "I'm fine," in the tone people used when they were absolutely not fine but had decided to be useful.
Elena sat down on the floor of Adrian's study because her knees stopped understanding hierarchy.
Adrian crouched in front of her slowly, one hand braced on the desk. "He's safe."
"Today."
"Yes."
She looked at him. "You gave up your seat."
"Temporarily."
"Don't do that."
"What?"
"Make sacrifice sound administrative."
His mouth softened and did not become a smile.
For one quiet moment, the room let them breathe.
Mara entered and ruined it.
"Press conference," she said. "Celeste just announced Adrian suffered a neurological relapse. She's petitioning for emergency competency review."
Elena stood too fast.
Adrian did not move.
That frightened her.
He looked at the muted screen on the wall. Celeste stood before microphones in pearls and black, eyes bright with practiced pain.
My son needs rest, the captions read. This family asks for privacy while we make necessary medical decisions.
Elena watched Adrian's face.
He looked less angry than she expected.
More alone.
Then Celeste said the final sentence.
Until Adrian is well enough to speak for himself, his wife must be protected from further manipulation.
The petition named Elena as compromised.
