Ch. 22 - No Contract Listening

Chapter 22

No Contract Listening

Celeste was removed from the foundation before dinner.

Not arrested yet. Wealth made consequences procedural before it made them real. But her office was sealed, her voting authority suspended, and every person who had applauded her grief that morning began rewriting their loyalty by evening.

Elena watched it from Adrian's study window and felt nothing clean enough to name.

"You are free," Adrian said behind her.

She closed her eyes.

Of all the things he could have said, that was the one designed to hurt them both.

"The proxy will be voided," he continued. "The marriage can be annulled. Noah is safe. Your father will face charges, but Mara can separate your brother from the company filings."

"Administrative sacrifice," Elena said.

He went quiet.

She turned.

Adrian stood beside the desk, cane in one hand, the other resting on a folder that contained the practical demolition of their marriage. He had arranged her freedom with the same efficiency his family had arranged her captivity.

That should have felt different.

It did.

It felt worse.

"You don't get to decide that for me."

"I am trying not to keep you because I want to."

There it was.

No music. No storm. No boardroom full of witnesses. Just the sentence in the room, unable to retreat.

Elena crossed to the desk.

Adrian did not move.

"Say it without the contract listening," she said.

His fingers tightened on the folder.

"Elena."

"No proxy. No voting rights. No safety clause. No useful wife." She stopped in front of him. "Say what you want when it costs you nothing to lie and everything to tell the truth."

He looked at her for a long time.

Then he let go of the folder.
