Chapter 24
The First Page
The chapel looked smaller without the machines.
No nurses. No attorneys. No Celeste in black. No father pretending grief. No cameras waiting to turn a woman's silence into a story they could sell.
Only Elena, Adrian, Mara at the door because someone still needed to be practical, and Noah in the back pew with a bruise on his cheek and both hands wrapped around coffee he had no intention of drinking.
"This is strange," Noah said.
"Most weddings are," Elena said.
"Most weddings don't have chain of custody paperwork in the vestry."
Mara lifted one shoulder. "Efficient location."
Adrian stood at the front without the cane. Not because he did not need it, Elena suspected, but because pride was healing slower than his body. She joined him where the machines had been.
The old ring fit badly. The new one was simple, chosen that morning from a jeweler who asked no questions after Mara showed him her badge.
Adrian took Elena's hand.
This time, no one arranged it.
"I cannot promise my family won't keep trying to use the law like a weapon," he said.
"Good. I hate unrealistic vows."
"I can promise not to make decisions about your life and call it protection."
Elena breathed once. "I can promise not to confuse leaving with freedom just because I am afraid staying means being trapped."
His thumb moved once over her knuckles.
"I choose this," he said.
"So do I."
That was all. No officiant. No legal theater. No audience that mattered except the two people who had survived being turned into paperwork.
Afterward, Elena went to the vestry and signed one final document.
Not a proxy.
Not a contract.
The first page of a sworn statement against Celeste Marlowe, Grant Marlowe, and every person who had helped make a bride out of evidence.
Adrian signed beneath her name.
For once, the ink made them both freer.
You've finished The Coma Vow.
