The False Abdication
The city woke to copies of Elara's abdication posted on every gate. Her signature declared she had abandoned Liora and accepted permanent silence.
The paper was genuine. Elara had signed it while drugged after the failed purge.
Liora wanted to burn every copy. Senna insisted they authenticate it publicly, including the physician's dosing record and Venn's witness mark.
Their honesty cost them the easy story. People who hated Venn still asked why Elara had stayed away twelve years.
Elara answered from the palace steps: "Because exile became a life I loved."
The crowd went quiet. A ruler who admitted she did not want them was harder to celebrate and harder to manipulate.
Then Venn released Rowan's confession, edited to say Elara ordered the purge herself.
