Rowan Reads His Signature
Rowan's public trial began before Venn's judges. Instead of denying the exile signature, Rowan read the entire order aloud, including his own cowardice.
His confession stripped him of command, pension, and hereditary rank. It also made the ledger admissible because he authenticated the seal against his interest.
Half the city watch laid down its weapons. The other half followed Venn's deputy.
Elara met Rowan as guards transferred him. He did not ask whether the sacrifice earned her.
"It earns the truth," she said.
A blast shook the floor. From the crown vault below came Tavin's voice, speaking in Venn's cadence.
