Ch. 20 - The Names That Rule

Chapter 20

The Names That Rule

Asterra's first civic assembly met in the laundry yard because no one trusted the throne room.

Liora negotiated grain without a marriage. Mara and Senna opened the archive under a rule that victims controlled their own records. Rowan testified without uniform or pardon. Venn faced charges written under statutes he had once used against dissenters.

Elara accepted a one-year post as first witness, limited by five other signatures. She refused the crown, the palace rooms, and every hereditary claim for Tavin.

On the coast, she rebuilt a kitchen she could not remember. Tavin placed blue icing on a crooked cake and did not tell her it was a reenactment until she asked.

Rowan arrived with no escort. "I am not asking you to forgive the signature."

"Good."

"I am asking whether I may stay for dinner."

Elara looked at Tavin. Her son shrugged with theatrical indifference and set down a third plate.

In the new assembly hall, the broken crown remained behind glass. Beneath it, every visitor had to read the same sentence before entering:

Power begins where ownership ends.

A child pressed her palm to the glass and spoke her own name. Nothing took it from her.
