Chapter 12
Her Own Signature
Mira let Lydia finish destroying her own throne.
The trust required two living daughters until succession. Mara's death triggered probate. By concealing it, Lydia had invalidated every trustee action taken afterward—including Celia's appointment, the clinic payments, and the transfer of foundation assets into Lydia's private management company.
Elias filed the emergency probate notice from the gala floor. Owen seconded independent administration. Celia authenticated the missing execution page. None of them could place Mira in control that night, which was precisely the protection the foundation needed.
Lydia's arrest did not repair eleven months. Nessa's son still lay in surgery. Tomas and his daughter needed separate counsel. Celia would testify under agreement and answer for the acts she chose. Elias submitted his license and the Ward & Hale token archive for review.
At dawn, Dr. Shaw cut the plastic Mara band from Mira's wrist and sealed it as evidence.
"What happens to the west wing?" Owen asked.
Mira looked through the open doors. "It becomes offices for the independent custodian. No patient rooms."
Elias waited beside the gate with her restored passport application, a temporary identity order, and keys to a car she had chosen herself.
"I can drive," he said. "Or arrange someone else."
"You can come to the hospital. Nessa should hear the result from both of us."
He accepted the condition without turning it into a promise.
Mira signed the temporary order on the hood of the car. The letters felt unfamiliar after months of being forbidden, but they belonged to her hand.
The gate opened.
This time no one had unlocked it for her. The new control rested in her palm, and Hawthorne House had no family override.
You've finished The Daughter in the Locked Wing.
