Chapter 23
No Denial
Mara did not deny the contract.
That was why the interview went viral.
She sat across from Celia in a small studio and kept her hands flat on the table.
“Did Adrian Mercer force you?” Celia asked.
“He offered me two choices. Neither was good.”
“Do you love him?”
“No.”
“Do you hate him?”
Mara considered the question.
“I hate what he believes money allows him to do.”
“Do you believe he is protecting you?”
“I believe he is protecting an investigation that includes me.”
Celia leaned back.
“Your father’s name has been damaged for years. Why speak now?”
“Because the people who profited from his collapse have mistaken silence for surrender.”
After the interview, Celia handed Mara a second memory card.
“This was not on the tape.”
The card contained a private video from Quinn Meridian’s final board meeting.
Mara’s father stood before the directors.
Victor sat among them.
Her father said, “If the lenders call the debt tomorrow, the company dies. If they wait, the people behind Northbridge take the company without paying for it.”
Victor replied, “You are asking us to gamble on a ledger no one has seen.”
“I am asking you to stop helping them.”
The video cut.
The final frame showed someone entering the boardroom.
Mara’s mother.
She carried a folder marked Q-17.
Adrian watched the footage without speaking.
“She was alive,” Mara said.
“Yes.”
“Your family knew.”
“Not all of them.”
“Which ones?”
Adrian paused the video.
In the reflection of the glass wall, a young Adrian stood outside the boardroom.
He had been there.
He had heard the argument.
Mara turned toward him.
“You knew before I did.”
Adrian did not deny it.
The absence of denial cut deeper than any explanation.
