The Garden Map With No North
The copy of the Wren House map had no north arrow and no conservation seal.
Ravi spread it across June's dining table. He had represented the trust for eleven years and looked personally betrayed by the missing embossment.
"Without the original seal, this is a planning illustration," he said. "With it, the south meadow cannot be leased unless replacement land is placed in trust."
"Did Beatrice know?"
"Everyone negotiating the scheme knew."
Arthur had emailed Ravi at 8:06 on the morning of his death: BRING A BUYER. NOON. ORIGINAL ONLY.
"He planned to sell the map?"
"Or sell access to it. Arthur enjoyed ambiguity."
The paper carried four pinholes and a clean rectangle where a label had been removed. June tilted it toward the window. Pencil pressure remained beneath the erasure: HART NURSERY, 1974.
The dead nursery had once supplied every plant at Wren House. Its catalogue might identify Arthur's ledger codes - and its archive had passed through Beatrice's garage.
At noon, June and Ravi searched the potting room under Asha's supervision. Behind a cracked seed cabinet they found an empty archival sleeve.
On its label Arthur had written: ORIGINAL MAP. OFFER ACCEPTED.
Below it, in newer ink, someone had added a time.
11:45.
Arthur had arranged a sale fourteen minutes after he was found dead.
