Chapter 7
The Room Prepared for Her
Mae had learned that the most dangerous moment in a crisis was when everyone thought they understood it. At the Vale Medical Center ICU, urgency crackled in the air. Nurses moved purposefully, clipboards tucked under their arms, phones pressed to ears, all while maintaining a facade of control. But Mae could feel the tension beneath the surface, a thick veil of unspoken fear that hovered over the sterile gray walls.
Elias stood beside her, close enough that their bodies almost brushed, but he refrained from touching her. That restraint mattered more than she could express. It gave Mae the freedom to navigate the distance between them, a tangible reminder of the fraught emotions swirling in her chest.
"They enter an antagonist-controlled space and find a prepared trap," Mae murmured, her voice barely above a whisper, the words laced with urgency.
Elias nodded, his jaw tightening. "Then we make them show us where it leads."
They were piecing together a puzzle everyone else had overlooked: a time stamp on a security feed, a misplaced access card that shouldn’t have been there, a line in a chart that contradicted the doctor’s notes. Samira had warned Mae—truth never arrived neatly wrapped; it often came disguised as something ordinary, something overlooked.
The door to the supply room swung open, and Mae inhaled sharply. A rush of cold air hit her face, sharpening her focus as she stepped inside. The fluorescent lights flickered overhead, casting stark shadows across rows of medical supplies. Her heart raced. She understood the cost of being right. The evidence they sought could save them, but it could also ensnare the people they loved, dragging them into danger.
Elias’s presence anchored her, his gaze steady as he read the calculation in her eyes. His hand found her lower back, warm through the thin fabric of her shirt, but then he hesitated, letting it linger before retracting it.
"Tell me what you need," he said, his voice low and firm.
For the first time since the chaos erupted, Mae found herself at a loss. She could lay out a hundred plans, but none of them felt adequate. Instead, she looked into his deep-set eyes, seeing the vulnerability behind the resolve. In that moment, she made the only honest choice available: to trust him and keep moving forward together.
She opened the drawer of a nearby cabinet, heart pounding as she pulled it wide. Inside lay the evidence they had been searching for—a file, unassuming at first glance, but its contents were explosive. As she rifled through the papers, her pulse quickened. This had been crafted for her, not just in response to the crisis, but aimed directly at her.
"Mae, what is it?" Elias’s breath was a whisper against her ear, his concern palpable.
She pulled out a document, her fingers trembling slightly as she scanned the pages. "This... this was set up for me. They knew I would be here."
"What do you mean?" Elias leaned closer, peering over her shoulder. His warmth enveloped her, grounding her in the moment.
"There are notes here, details about my last case. They’re using my work against me, manipulating the situation to frame me as a target." Her voice lowered to a whisper, the gravity of the revelation sinking in. "It’s a trap, Elias. A deliberate setup."
Elias’s jaw tightened, a flash of anger igniting in his eyes. "We need to get this to Samira. This could change everything."
Mae shook her head, fear gnawing at her insides. "No. It’s too dangerous. If they’re watching us—"
"They’ll only see us if we stand still," he said, determination flooding his voice. "We need a plan, Mae. We need to expose this."
She glanced back at the door, the sterile hallway beyond seeming to pulse with unseen threats. "And what if we’re wrong? What if we’re putting everyone at risk?"
Elias stepped closer, his gaze fierce. "Then we make sure we’re not. We get evidence, we confront whoever’s behind this, and we don’t let them take anyone else down with us."
Mae felt the weight of his words, the promise of action igniting something deep inside her. It felt reckless, but she could sense the urgency of the situation. “Okay. But we have to be smart about this. We can’t let them know we’re onto them.”
The tension between them crackled, the air thick with unspoken emotions as they exchanged a determined glance. She knew they had crossed a line, and there was no turning back.
Suddenly, the distant sound of footsteps echoed in the hallway, drawing closer. Mae’s breath caught in her throat. "We need to go, now!"
Elias nodded, and together they slipped the file into Mae’s bag, urgency propelling them forward. As they crept toward the door, a shadow loomed just outside, and Mae’s heart raced. They were running out of time.
“Stay close,” Elias murmured, his voice steady even as the world around them threatened to unravel.
They opened the door just a crack, peering through the narrow gap. Mae's stomach twisted as she recognized the figure moving down the corridor. It was someone she never expected to see here—someone who could turn everything upside down.
“Mae,” Elias breathed, his voice barely above a whisper, “this isn’t over.”
