Chapter 133
The False Rescue: The Call
The temporary housing site buzzed with a low hum of anxiety, a stark contrast to the bright, sterile walls that boxed in the residents. Mara stood at the edge of the conference room, the smell of stale coffee mingling with the scent of worn-out plastic chairs. Her fingers grazed the edge of the table, feeling the rough texture of the laminate as she surveyed the scene. Nia was already there, her brow furrowed, the relocation roster spread out like a crime scene across the worn surface.
“I can’t believe they think we wouldn’t notice,” Nia muttered, disbelief creeping into her voice. She tapped a finger on the roster, punctuating her frustration. “Look at these missing names. They’re not just numbers; they’re lives.”
Mara nodded, her stomach knotting as she recalled the stories behind those names. The residents had come to trust her, and with that trust came a heavy burden. It was a fine line between being their advocate and keeping her own conscience intact.
Nia pulled out two versions of the same receipt, each bearing a different total, and spread them before the group. “How do you explain this?” she asked, her voice rising slightly, drawing the attention of the room. “One receipt shows payment for relocation, and the other? Well, it's a joke. They’re forcing people to choose between money and the truth.”
The tension in the room shifted. A witness, a middle-aged woman with tired eyes, looked from the receipts to Nia and back again. “I didn’t realize… I thought I had to take what they offered. I didn’t know I could refuse.” Her voice trembled, laden with regret.
Leon, the head of the investigation team, leaned forward, his expression stern. “We need answers before the next inspection. If they’re using these documents to manipulate people, we can’t let it slide. Nia, you need to ensure every affected resident is heard.”
“Agreed,” Nia replied, her resolve hardening. But Rowan, the legal advisor, interjected, her tone cautious. “Rushing to make statements might backfire. We don’t want to give them more ammunition.”
Mara felt the weight of their arguments settle heavily on her shoulders. She turned to the witness, who was now visibly shaken. “You’re not alone in this,” she promised, her voice steady despite the turmoil inside her. “The next person asked to carry this debt won’t face it alone. We’re here to help you.”
The woman’s eyes glistened with tears, and Mara choked back her own emotions. It was a promise she couldn’t guarantee, yet it felt necessary to offer something, anything, to ease the burden of the truth that threatened to crush them all. But with that admission came a cost—Leon needed access to the building for one night, and she hadn’t yet fully grasped the consequences of that request.
Before she could collect her thoughts, the digital portal on the side wall flickered to life, a notification flashing under her name. Mara stepped closer, the words on the screen pulling her in like a siren’s call.
“A new filing?” she whispered, her breath catching. She glanced back at Nia and the others, the urgency of the moment pressing against her chest. “I need to check this.”
“Wait,” Leon said, his eyes narrowing. “What if it’s a trap? You can’t just walk into this blindly, Mara.”
Mara hesitated, feeling the weight of their collective gaze on her. The unspoken fears and hopes clung to the walls of the room. But she couldn’t ignore the urgency of the message. “I have to know,” she replied, her voice firm, yet laced with uncertainty. “If this is about the rescue plan… if it’s targeting the witness network…”
“Then you need to be careful,” Rowan warned, her tone grave. “You know what’s at stake.”
Mara nodded, her heart pounding as she reached for her phone, the screen lighting up with yet another reminder of the precarious balance she was trying to maintain. The choice hung before her: to dig deeper into the potential trap or to stand back and protect herself.
With a breath, she made her decision. “I’m not backing down. Not now.”
As she tapped the notification, the room fell silent, the air thick with anticipation. The screen illuminated her face, revealing a message that could change everything. Whatever lay ahead, she knew this was just the beginning.
