Chapter 145
The False Rescue: The Witness
The cramped room, illuminated by a flickering fluorescent bulb, felt stifling. Papers cluttered the small table, but the most significant document lay before Mara, its creased edges whispering tales of betrayal. The relocation roster, brought by Della, was a yellowed relic of deceit, and the date scrawled across the top cast a long shadow over them.
“Can you believe this?” Della's voice cut through the thick air, her frustration evident. She leaned closer, tension radiating from her as she pointed at a line on the roster. “They thought they could just sweep this under the rug. But look at this.” Her finger trembled with indignation. “They want her to choose between money and the truth. It’s a setup, Mara.”
Mara felt the weight of those words settle in her chest. Years of untangling lies spun by institutions meant to protect the vulnerable had left her jaded. But this was different. This was Celeste—a young woman with a life hanging in the balance, sitting rigidly in the corner. Her eyes darted nervously between Della and Mara, hands twisting the hem of her sweater like it could shield her from the pressure.
“Celeste,” Mara said, softening her tone as she turned to the young woman. “You don’t have to decide anything right now. We’re here to help you.”
Celeste's eyes shimmered with unshed tears, the weight of her choices evident. “But they said if I don’t take the money, I’ll lose everything. My family… I can’t let them down. I thought this was a rescue.”
“It’s a false rescue,” Della interjected, her voice rising. “They’re trying to break the witness network. They want to isolate you!”
Mara shot Della a warning glance, sensing the urgency of the moment. “Let’s take a step back,” she said, striving for calm. “What we need is clarity. This document—” she gestured to the roster, “it’s proof of their manipulation. We can use it.”
Leon, who had been pacing near the door, halted abruptly, his brow furrowing. “We need answers before the next inspection. If they catch wind of this—” He looked at Celeste, concern etched on his face. “They could retaliate.”
Nia, leaning forward with intent, added, “Every affected resident deserves to be heard. If we don’t act now, we’re complicit in this. We can’t let fear dictate our choices.”
Rowan, arms crossed, shook his head. “A hasty statement could backfire. We have to be strategic. If we’re not careful, we could end up providing evidence against ourselves.”
Mara felt the weight of their expectations pressing down on her. She was the forensic bookkeeper, the one who analyzed the numbers and unveiled hidden truths. But this was no longer just about the ledger; it was about lives hanging in the balance.
“Listen,” Mara said, her voice steady yet urgent. “I’ll document everything. The discrepancies, the pressure tactics. But I promise you, Celeste, the next person they try to manipulate won’t face this alone. We’ll make sure they understand what they’re up against.”
Celeste wiped her eyes with the back of her hand, her expression shifting from despair to a small hope. “You think we can fight back?”
“We have to,” Mara replied, a fierce determination igniting within her. “The truth is our greatest weapon.”
As Mara scribbled notes into her case log, an unsettling feeling crept over her. She glanced toward the small window, half-expecting to see a shadow lurking outside. The urgency was clear, but an undercurrent of dread gnawed at her—a sense that this was merely the beginning.
Turning to the next page of her notebook, Mara’s heart dropped. The envelope she had received earlier lay open on the table, revealing a signature she never expected to see. It belonged to someone presumed dead.
“Della,” Mara said, her voice trembling. “We need to talk about this. Now.” The stakes had just escalated, and time was slipping through their fingers.
