Ch. 26 - Warehouse Six

Chapter 26

Warehouse Six

Nia insisted on taking Rowan with them. Rowan insisted on a warrant. The warrant took time they did not have.

They waited outside Warehouse 6, the air thick with the smell of rust and oil, as the sun dipped, casting long shadows across the cracked pavement. A delivery driver, wearing a faded blue cap, opened the heavy gate, revealing a cavernous interior filled with stacks of boxed files and old office furniture, remnants of a forgotten era. Mara squinted through a broken window, her heart pounding at the sight of the disarray inside. It felt like a graveyard of secrets.

Adrian called, his voice clipped. “Leave,” he said. “They are clearing the archive tonight.”

Mara frowned, her grip tightening on her phone. “How do you know?” she pressed, aware of the urgency that underlined his warning. Silence answered her, thick and suffocating.

Leon, pacing beside her, ran a hand through his tousled hair. “We can’t just stand here,” he said, glancing at the warehouse with a mix of frustration and desperation. “We need to get in there.”

Mara shot him a warning look. “No. We’re not going in without a plan. We can’t risk it.”

His face hardened, the old belief that her caution was another kind of abandonment flickering in his eyes. “You think waiting for a judge’s order is going to help us? They’ll be gone by then.”

Just as he spoke, Rowan emerged from the shadows, her expression taut. “I’ve got the warrant,” she announced, holding up the crumpled document like a trophy. Relief washed over Mara, but it was short-lived. The tension in the air remained, thickening with each passing second.

Leon’s eyes lit up. “Finally. Let’s go.”

But before they could move, a shredding truck rumbled out of the warehouse, its engine growling like a beast awakened. Mara’s stomach dropped as she caught sight of the driver’s manifest, fluttering in the wind like a fallen leaf.

“Wait!” she shouted, pointing. “Look!”

Rowan rushed over, her brows furrowing as she read the destination. “Chen Community Clinic,” she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper. “What could they possibly want there?”

Mara felt the weight of the moment settle on her shoulders. “We need to follow that truck,” she said, her tone firm. “If they’re taking something to the clinic, it could be our only chance to find out what they’re hiding.”

Leon hesitated, glancing back at the warehouse. “But we don’t have time. What if they notice us?”

“We can’t let fear dictate our choices,” Nia interjected, her eyes steely. “This is bigger than us. We need to know what’s in those boxes.”

Rowan nodded, her resolve hardening. “I’m in. Let’s go.”

Mara felt a rush of adrenaline as they piled into Leon’s car, the engine roaring to life. “Follow that truck,” she instructed, her gaze locked on the road ahead. The warehouse faded into the background, a looming specter of what they were leaving behind.

As they sped through the dimly lit streets, Mara’s mind raced with possibilities. What secrets lay hidden in those boxes? What did the clinic have to do with the financial crimes that had already cost them everything?

The truck turned a corner, and Leon swerved after it, the tires screeching against the asphalt. “I can’t lose it!” he shouted, determination etched across his face.

“Just keep your eyes on the road,” Nia said, her voice steady. “We’ll figure it out when we get there.”

But as they approached the clinic, a sinking feeling settled in Mara’s gut. The clinic, usually bustling with community members, stood eerily quiet under the fluorescent lights. The shredding truck was parked outside, its driver already unloading boxes.

“Now what?” Rowan whispered, her voice barely audible.

Mara glanced at the others, weighing her options. They could confront the driver, demand answers, or they could slip into the shadows and see what was really happening inside.

“Let’s go in,” she decided, the words spilling out before she could reconsider. It was a choice that could change everything.

As they crept toward the entrance, a sudden noise made them freeze. The door swung open, and a figure stepped out, silhouetted against the harsh light. Mara’s her pulse kicked again, but this time it was laced with determination.

“Stay close,” she whispered, her eyes narrowing as she prepared for whatever came next.

The figure turned, and Mara’s breath caught in her throat. She recognized the familiar face, one she never expected to see here.

“Evelyn?” she gasped, caught between shock and dread.

The clinic’s secrets were about to unravel, and Mara knew they were in deeper than they ever intended.
