Chapter 6
The Retention Folder
Adrian Vale arrived at the ferry terminal with an umbrella he did not share.
He was younger than Mara had expected, hollow-eyed and precise. Instead of a folder, he handed her a password-protected drive and a handwritten list of file hashes.
“This proves nothing by itself,” he said. “It proves the records existed on dates Vantage says they did not.”
“Why help me?”
“Because Celeste has selected a scapegoat. Compliance is always a useful corpse.”
The drive contained retention notices, deletion approvals, and a chain of emails sent hours after the redevelopment council voted to authorize Vantage’s purchase. One message from Celeste read: Move the irregular deposits under Chen. His children will settle.
Mara copied the files to an encrypted account and sent Rowan the hashes, not the documents. Rowan replied within minutes: preserve the device; meet at the precinct; do not distribute.
Then Adrian saw the final email.
His face drained. “I didn’t know about the clinic.”
“You knew enough to sign.”
“I knew a lender wanted a troubled trust reorganized. I told myself paperwork was not the harm.” He looked toward the water, where commuters were boarding under bright terminal lights. “That is how people like Celeste operate. They sell each person a smaller version of the truth.”
Across the plaza, Leon stood beside a Vantage SUV.
Mara did not call out. She watched Celeste place a hand on his shoulder, maternal from a distance. Leon accepted an envelope. When he turned, he saw Mara and folded the envelope behind his back.
Celeste looked directly at Mara. She lifted two fingers in a small farewell.
Adrian followed Mara’s gaze. “That is not a payment,” he said.
Inside the envelope was a tenant list, every name marked with a date. At the bottom, beside Mrs. Alvarez’s apartment number, Celeste had written one word.
Vacant.
