Chapter 61

Witnesses for Sale: The Call

The fluorescent lights buzzed above Mara as she settled into her chair at the long, polished table in the federal inquiry's conference room. The sterile white walls felt oppressive, each corner echoing the muffled whispers of urgency and dread. She wrapped her fingers around a cold, metal pen, her own pulse thrumming against the unyielding surface of the table. Across from her, Della stood poised, her hands gripping the edges of the table like it were her only anchor.

“Here it is,” Della announced, her voice steady but her eyes betraying a hint of anxiety. She held up a document, the edges crinkled from being handled too often. “This payment trail runs through a nonprofit, dated just a week before Vantage’s public statement.”

Mara leaned forward, the air thickening around her. The consequences of that date were staggering. If it contradicted Vantage’s narrative, it could unravel everything they had built. Della cleared her throat, her voice gaining strength as she read aloud. “The author expected the witness to hide this clause… that she was given a choice between money and the truth.”

The room shifted as the weight of Della’s words settled in. Mara could almost feel the witness's betrayal, a clear force that twisted in the air. The woman, seated at the far end of the table, gripped the chair's armrests, her knuckles white with tension. Confusion and anger flickered across her face, a silent battle raging within.

“Leon needs answers before the next inspection,” Mara murmured, her gaze flicking toward Leon, who was pacing in the corner, the muscles in his jaw taut with determination. “Nia wants every affected resident to have a voice in this.”

Rowan, who had been observing the exchange, interjected cautiously. “We can’t rush this. A statement made in haste could backfire, become evidence against us.”

Mara nodded, absorbing the weight of his words as she opened her notebook, the familiar rush of adrenaline igniting her thoughts. Celeste, the lead investigator, leaned back in her chair, her gaze sharp and unyielding. “We need to turn cooperation into a test of loyalty,” she said, her voice steady. “Those who stand with us must understand the consequences of their silence.”

A flicker of defiance sparked in Mara’s chest. She had witnessed too many lives crushed under the weight of secrets, and she refused to let the next person bear this burden alone. “I’ll make sure the next witness knows they won’t face this demand by themselves,” she promised, jotting down her commitment in the case log. “We need to show them they’re not alone in this.”

The witness, her eyes darting nervously around the room, was clearly grappling with the reality of her situation. Mara could sense her fear, the desperation for truth clear. It was a turning point—a choice between silence and speaking out against the corruption that had ensnared her life.

Then, Della’s voice broke through the tension, sharp and clear. “We’ve confirmed that two witnesses were offered different versions of the same bargain. They’re playing us against each other.”

Mara glanced at Della, noting the fierce determination etched into her features. “Let’s use that,” she suggested, her mind racing with possibilities. “We can leverage their discrepancies to build a stronger case.”

Before they could delve deeper into strategy, a sharp knock interrupted their discussion. The door swung open, and a federal agent strode in, holding an envelope marked with the agency’s seal. Mara felt her stomach drop.

“For you, Mara,” he said, his expression unreadable as he handed it over.

With trembling fingers, she took the envelope and tore it open, her heart pounding. Inside lay a single sheet of paper, and a name leapt out at her, chilling her to the core—a name she had thought was long gone.

“Who is it?” Della asked, leaning closer, her curiosity piqued.

Mara’s breath caught, the consequences crashing over her like a tidal wave. “It’s… it’s from Elias,” she whispered, the name heavy and sharp on her tongue. “He’s alive.”

The room fell into a stunned silence. Questions hung in the air, unspoken but clear, as the gravity of the revelation settled around them. The stakes had just escalated, and Mara realized they were teetering on the edge of something monumental. The choice before her was clear: to seek the truth at all costs, or to retreat into the shadows of fear and uncertainty.
