Chapter 66
Witnesses for Sale: The Witness
The fluorescent lights flickered above the long conference table, their sterile glow illuminating a chaotic spread of documents. Mara perched on the edge of her chair, fingers tapping nervously against the laminated folder before her. The federal inquiry room felt cold and clinical, a world apart from the comfort of her home office. Still, determination coursed through her as she focused on the task at hand.
Adrian leaned over the table, his brow creased in concentration. He pointed at the retention log displayed on the screen, his voice low but firm. "Look at this entry," he said, his finger jabbing the air. "This payment trail through the nonprofit is dated two weeks before Vantage's public statement. It contradicts everything they’ve been saying."
Mara’s pulse quickened. She shifted her gaze to the witness, a woman in her late forties, who sat across from them. The witness's eyes were wide, confusion etched into her features. Her fingers twisted the hem of her sweater, darting glances between Adrian and Mara, like one of them might unravel the mystery that ensnared her.
"This is serious," Mara said, keeping her voice steady despite the turmoil within. "If this log was altered, it means someone is manipulating your testimony."
Adrian opened the log further, pointing to the highlighted entry. "It’s been changed. Look."
The witness leaned closer, squinting at the screen. "I—I didn’t know. I thought I was just helping," she stammered, her voice trembling. “I thought I was doing the right thing.”
Leon, seated at the head of the table, interjected, urgency in his tone. "We need answers before the next inspection. Time is not on our side."
Nia, arms crossed tightly over her chest, finally spoke up. "Every affected resident deserves to be heard. We can't let this slip under the radar. We owe it to them."
Rowan leaned back, skepticism written all over his face. "A rushed statement could backfire. We need to tread carefully. If this goes wrong, it could become evidence against us."
Mara felt the pressure of the room closing in. Celeste, the lead investigator, had a knack for turning cooperation into a test of loyalty. If they didn’t navigate this situation delicately, the fallout could be catastrophic—not only for the witness but for Mara's family, too.
"Listen," Mara said, her eyes locking onto the witness's fearful gaze. "If you decide to cooperate, I want you to know that you won’t face this alone. We’ll find a way to protect you."
The witness blinked, tears pooling in her eyes. "But what if they come after me? What if I lose everything?"
A pang of empathy twisted in Mara’s chest. She understood the stakes all too well. "You have to ask yourself what you value more: the money they’re offering or your integrity. We can help you find the truth."
Leon nodded, his expression softening. "We’ll put measures in place to keep you safe. But you must be honest with us. No more secrets."
The woman took a shaky breath, her resolve flickering. "I just want to do the right thing for my kids," she whispered, voice barely above a murmur. "I can’t let them grow up in a world built on lies."
Mara scribbled a note in the case log, documenting the change and the witness’s concerns. It felt like sealing a pact, a weighty commitment to a cause that could change everything. Yet, the file didn’t shield her family from the encroaching shadows; it merely marked their silence in an unfolding timeline of deceit.
As the witness studied the log, her expression shifted. Fear was replaced by determination. "I’ll do it," she declared, her voice gaining strength. "I’ll tell the truth."
Before Mara could respond, a sharp knock carried through the room, and the door swung open. Elias, a colleague known for his uncanny ability to anticipate trouble, stepped inside. His expression was grim, an uncharacteristic seriousness casting a shadow over his usually relaxed demeanor. "We need to talk. There’s something you’re all missing."
A chill coursed through Mara's veins. What had Elias uncovered? The stakes were rising, and each choice they made tightened the noose around them. As she locked eyes with the witness, determination ignited within her. The path ahead would be fraught with moral dilemmas and hidden dangers.
And just like that, the page that should have followed slipped silently into the void.
