Chapter 70
Witnesses for Sale: The Closed Door
The federal inquiry room was uninviting, a sterile space dominated by a long, polished table surrounded by unforgiving metal chairs. The fluorescent lights hummed overhead, casting an unforgiving glare over the papers scattered before Mara. She adjusted her glasses, squinting at the receipts that lay like evidence of a crime waiting to be unraveled. Nia leaned in, urgency threading her voice as she pointed at the documents.
“Look at the dates,” Nia said, her manicured finger tapping insistently against the paper. “This one was issued before the supposed donation. How do you explain that?”
Mara could feel the weight of Nia’s gaze as she turned to the witness across the table. The woman, once composed, now appeared pale and shaken, her eyes darting around the room as though searching for an escape. “I didn’t know,” she stammered, her hands trembling as they gripped the edge of the table. “I thought—it was just a payment.”
Leon, ever the pragmatist, leaned forward, his voice low but firm. “We need answers before the next inspection. The pressure is mounting, and if we don’t act fast…” He let the sentence linger, and Mara could almost hear the unspoken threats echoing in the silence.
Nia shot him a warning look, her brow furrowing. “Rushing this could backfire, Leon. We can’t afford to have a statement turn into evidence against us.”
Rowan, nonchalantly leaning against the wall with his arms crossed, nodded in agreement. “We need to ensure that every affected resident is heard, not just those who fit the narrative.” His tone was calm, but Mara could sense the tension simmering beneath the surface.
Celeste, seated at the head of the table, interjected, her voice steady and deliberate. “Cooperation often comes with strings attached. We need to test loyalty here.” She surveyed the room, her gaze sharp as it assessed the reactions of everyone present. It felt like a chess match, each player calculating their next move, aware that the stakes were high.
Mara pushed back her chair slightly, the sound of metal on tile breaking the charged atmosphere. She felt the moral dilemma weighing heavily on her. Years of forensic bookkeeping had honed her skills in deciphering lies hidden in financial records, but this was different. Here, she was not just untangling numbers; she was facing a choice that could shift the course of lives. Picking up her pen, she wrote a note in the case log, a small promise to herself and to the others in the room. “The next person asked to carry this debt will not face the demand alone.”
The words felt significant as they left her pen, a vow that tethered her to the truth, whatever it might cost her. She caught Leon’s eye; appreciation flickered there, but so did concern. He understood the gravity of their situation.
“Can we trust her?” Mara’s voice was barely above a whisper as she turned her gaze back to the witness. “Can we trust that you’ll tell us everything?”
The woman hesitated, glancing nervously at the door like it were her lifeline. “I… I want to help, but I’m scared. If they find out I spoke…”
Leon leaned in closer, his expression softening as he reached out a hand. “You won’t be alone in this. We’ll protect you, but you have to be honest with us.”
As the weight of their promise settled in the room, Mara felt a flicker of resolve. Perhaps they could turn this around, expose the truth that lay hidden beneath layers of deceit. But just as the atmosphere began to shift, the portal on the wall chimed, drawing everyone’s attention.
Mara's heart sank as a new filing appeared under her name, the screen casting a cold glow that illuminated the room with an eerie light. “What now?” she muttered, dread pooling in her stomach.
Nia leaned closer to the screen, her eyes widening. “This could change everything.”
The tension snapped back into place, coiling tighter around them. Mara braced herself for what lay ahead, aware that one choice, one revelation, could lead them to salvation or plunge them deeper into the mire of corruption. The door had closed on one chapter, but it was opening wide for another. As she studied the new evidence, determination surged within her. She was ready to confront whatever awaited her on the other side.
