Chapter 81
The Family Account: The Missing Line
The sun hung low over the suburban sprawl as Mara stood in the entryway of her childhood home, the scent of aged wood and faint lavender clinging to the air. With every creak of the floorboards beneath her feet, memories flooded back—sliding down the banister, the warmth of her mother’s embrace, and now the weight of her mother’s secrets pressing down on her like a suffocating blanket.
“Why can’t you understand that this isn’t just about money?” Rowan’s voice cut through her reverie, sharp and insistent. He stood with a cassette in one hand and a key in the other, his brow furrowed with frustration. “This is about drawing a line in the sand!”
Mara clenched her jaw, her resolve wavering. “A line that could cost us everything, Rowan. We’re not just dealing with numbers on a spreadsheet.” She gestured toward the hastily arranged papers on the dining room table, the evidence of her mother’s private account laid bare before them. “This is my mother’s legacy. It’s her life.”
Rowan sighed, running a hand through his hair, his agitation clear. “And what about the lives affected by Vantage’s lies? We can’t let them sweep this under the rug. The date on that confession—” He pointed to the unsigned document, his voice escalating with urgency. “—it contradicts everything they’ve said.”
Leon, perched on the edge of the table, interjected, his voice low and tense. “We need answers before the next inspection. The Chen family has already covered for us once, but how long can we rely on that?”
Nia, arms crossed and brows knitted, added, “Every resident deserves to be heard. We can’t let this become just another corporate cover-up.” Her eyes flicked between the two men, assessing, calculating.
Rowan’s expression shifted, a flicker of concern passing over his face. “Rushing into a statement could backfire. If we’re not careful, it could form the basis of evidence against us.”
Mara took a breath, steeling herself against the rising tide of emotions. She pulled out her notebook, the familiar motion providing a momentary anchor. The words felt heavier than usual as she scribbled her thoughts. “I’ll make sure the next person asked to carry this debt won’t face it alone,” she promised, the weight of that commitment settling on her shoulders like a mantle.
Just then, the authority’s lawyer, a sharp-suited woman with an air of impatience, cleared her throat. “I think we need to take a recess,” she announced, her tone clipped as she scanned the room, eyes darting from one tense face to another. “I need more time to review these figures before we proceed.”
Mara’s heart sank as she watched the lawyer retreat to the hallway, leaving a heavy silence in her wake. The room felt suddenly smaller, the air thick with unspoken fears and unresolved tensions. She couldn’t shake the feeling that they were teetering on the edge of something monumental, one wrong move could send them tumbling into chaos.
Her phone buzzed on the table, pulling her attention away from the simmering conflict. She glanced down, her breath hitching in her throat as she saw her mother’s name flash across the screen. A jolt of anxiety shot through her, a visceral reminder of the woman who had spent years hiding secrets behind a smile.
“Who is it?” Rowan asked, noticing her sudden stillness.
“It’s... my mother,” Mara whispered, her voice barely audible. She hesitated, the phone vibrating like a heartbeat in her palm. “But she’s—she’s gone.”
“Answer it,” Leon urged, his eyes locking onto hers. “This could be important.”
Mara stared at the screen, her mind racing. What could her mother possibly want now? Was it a ghost seeking closure, or something more tangible? The stakes felt impossibly high, each second stretching into an eternity. She could feel the weight of her colleagues’ gazes, the pressure of their expectations, and for a moment, the world outside faded away.
With a trembling hand, she pressed the green button, bringing the phone to her ear. “Hello?”
Silence, and then a voice—familiar yet distant, like a haunting melody from her past. “Mara, it’s me. I need to tell you something...”
The words hung in the air, and in that moment, Mara knew she was about to step into a labyrinth of truths, one that could change everything.
“Are you safe?” Mara’s voice trembled, concern slicing through her initial shock.
“Not yet. But I’m working on it. Just listen carefully…”
The conversation spiraled into a maze of revelations, each word a step deeper into the unknown. Mara’s eyes darted around the room, her colleagues’ faces a blur as she focused on the voice that had once been a source of comfort now filled with urgency. The walls of her childhood home faded into the background as she braced herself for the storm ahead.
