Ch. 85 - The Family Account: The Call

Chapter 85

The Family Account: The Call

Mara stood in the dimly lit living room of her childhood home, where the familiar scent of cedar mingled with the musty aroma of old books. Sunlight filtered through the dusty blinds, casting striped shadows across the worn oak floor that creaked underfoot, each sound a reminder of the countless family gatherings that had once filled this space with laughter. Today, however, the warmth of nostalgia was overshadowed by the weight of the task at hand.

Leon paced beside her, his brow furrowed in concentration as he fiddled with the cassette tape he had brought along. “This could change everything,” he said, urgency lacing his voice. He held a small metallic key in his other hand, the potential to unlock secrets long buried. “If we can get confirmation from the tenant, we might finally have a way to prove Vantage is lying.”

Mara felt a knot tighten in her stomach at the thought of the tenant—Margaret Chen. A widow and mother, she was now an unwitting pawn in a game that had spiraled far beyond anyone's control. “I can’t let my mother’s account become just another statistic,” Mara murmured, resolve hardening within her. “Not when this is about real people with real lives.”

Leon glanced at his phone, then dialed Margaret’s number. As the line rang, Mara’s heart thudded in her chest. The walls seemed to close in, filled with echoes of family dinners that had turned into a cruel joke against the backdrop of their current crisis.

“Margaret? It’s Leon,” he said when the call connected, his voice steady but betraying tension. “I need to ask you about the document you received regarding the family account. Can you check your files for the date?”

Mara leaned closer, her breath hitching as she caught a glimpse of Leon’s face. The tenant was rifling through her records. The room felt electric, charged with the gravity of the moment. “What do you mean it’s not the same date?” Leon’s voice rose slightly, frustration creeping in. “No, I understand this is confusing, but we need to get to the bottom of it.”

Mara watched his expression shift, the weight of the conversation pressing down on him. Margaret had just realized the consequences of the document—she was being forced to choose between her financial stability and the truth. “Leon, tell her we’re here to help,” Mara urged, her voice barely above a whisper.

He relayed her message, his tone softening. “Margaret, we’re not your enemies. We want to make sure you’re protected in this.”

A tense silence stretched out, thick with unspoken fears. Then, Margaret’s voice broke through the static, wavering and uncertain. “I didn’t realize… I thought it was just a formality.”

Leon exchanged a glance with Mara, both of them feeling the weight of the consequences. The Chen family had concealed their first loss to protect their community, and now that decision was unraveling under the scrutiny of their investigation.

“Can you come to the next inspection?” Leon pressed, his tone firm yet compassionate. “We need your testimony.”

“I’ll think about it,” Margaret replied, her voice barely above a whisper.

After they hung up, Mara let out a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding, the room spinning with a mix of relief and dread. “What if she doesn’t show?” she asked, her voice shaky.

“She has to,” Leon replied, determination etched into his features. “We can’t let this go on any longer.”

Nia, who had been without a sound observing from the corner, stepped forward. “Every affected resident needs to be heard,” she added. “We can’t risk anyone else being silenced.”

Rowan leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed, his expression unreadable. “Just remember, if we rush this, it could backfire. A hasty statement could become evidence against us.”

Mara nodded, weighing the gravity of his words. She scribbled the new deadline into her case log, her mind racing through the consequences of their choices. “We can’t let fear dictate our actions,” she said, voice gaining strength. “The next person asked to carry this debt won’t face it alone.”

As the meeting concluded, a clear tension hung in the air. The trust they once had in Celeste had eroded, a fact that gnawed at Mara’s conscience.

With a final glance at the space that had once felt like home, Mara felt the weight of the choices ahead. Just then, her phone buzzed. It was a message from Celeste—a photograph of the room they had just left, the walls creaking with secrets and the air thick with unfinished business.

Mara stared at the image, her pulse quickening. Whatever awaited them next could change everything. The clock was ticking, and they were running out of time.
