Chapter 14
The Empty Bedroom Is Not Freedom
The empty bedroom produced laundry, bills and poor sleep. Freedom remained elsewhere.
Celia kept reaching for Martin's mug and resenting its absence. She had removed a person, not the habits built around him.
Sam brought wiring diagrams to the Marlowe and refused dinner.
"You are newly separated," he said. "I am not becoming a soft place where you avoid landing."
His boundary embarrassed and steadied her.
At noon the buyer filed an injunction preventing changes to the house and seeking enforcement of the sale. Martin's false email sat at the centre. His solicitor advised claiming Celia had verbally authorised it.
Martin refused.
"I sent it," he told the buyer. "She didn't consent."
The admission helped her case and damaged his. Celia thanked him without converting accountability into absolution.
That evening she slept diagonally across the bed. It felt less like victory than accurate measurement.
