The Night the Screen Went Blank

The Marlowe needed forty-eight thousand pounds of rewiring.

Insurance excluded pre-existing faults. The cooperative had six thousand. Farah's funding was gone.

Martin arrived during the fire inspection carrying no flowers and no argument.

"I can lend the balance," he said. "No sailing condition. No claim on the cinema. A documented loan to the cooperative."

Celia waited for the hidden decision. There was none she could see.

"Why?"

"Because I damaged our finances, and because the building matters to you. Those are separate facts."

She did not accept at once. Nina requested an independent agreement, repayment cap and member vote. Martin agreed to all three.

That night the cooperative approved the loan. Celia signed as one director among five.

Rowan watched from the aisle, then handed Celia the Toronto contract.

"I leave two days after opening."

Celia's first instinct was to ask how Rowan could choose that week.

She swallowed the question before it became inheritance.
