Chapter 21
What Gets Preserved
Celia and Marianne burned seven letters in their mother's sink.
They preserved five: one about work, one about fear, two about the cinema and one addressed to both daughters. They destroyed descriptions their mother had never consented to make public.
"Does it hurt?" Marianne asked.
"Yes."
"Good. You used to confuse professional discomfort with ethical error."
They laughed until smoke set off the alarm.
At the Marlowe, Sam cleaned the recovered film. The first minutes showed scenery, faces and technical mistakes. Then Celia's mother crossed the stage in paint-stained trousers.
She looked toward the camera and began to dance.
Not beautifully. Not sadly. Without asking what the movement would mean later.
The reel snapped before the final turn.
