The Money With Her Name On It
Celia used the inheritance from her aunt to pay the Marlowe's first repair bill.
The transfer failed.
Martin had moved the money into a sailing account eighteen months earlier. He called it cash management. The spreadsheet called it BOAT - CELIA CAPITAL.
"You counted my inheritance in a trip I never agreed to take."
"It was for us."
"My name appears only where the money came from."
He returned it that afternoon, but restoration did not erase the taking. Celia paid the electrician and opened a separate account before she could be persuaded that doing so was dramatic.
The buyer's claim arrived by courier: one hundred and twenty thousand pounds if the house sale failed.
Martin placed it between them. "Your project now threatens everything."
"No. Your signature began this."
Then the solicitor pointed to an email sent from Celia's account approving the sale timetable.
She had never written it. Martin had replied on her behalf from the shared tablet.
