The Life She Kept for Later

Ch. 9 - Rowan Cuts the Sound

Chapter 9

Rowan Cuts the Sound

Rowan deleted Celia's opening speech from the documentary.

In it, Celia called the Marlowe a space for reclaimed possibility. She sounded calm, generous and entirely absent.

"Why did you cut me?"

"Because you speak like a plaque."

Nina agreed. Edith agreed. Three contributors who disliked each other agreed.

Rowan played the silent footage. Without the speech, Celia's hands gripped the lectern while plaster fell behind her. The image said more about risk than her polished language.

"What would you say if this weren't a museum?" Rowan asked.

Celia faced the camera again. "My husband sold my house. I realised I had helped him believe my consent was optional."

No one moved.

"Keep that," Edith said.

Later Rowan received an email from a Toronto production company. The subject line read FINAL OFFER.

She closed the laptop before Celia could ask.
