Chapter 121
Claire Bennett Gets Arrested
Next, Claire Bennett and Ruby Sterling stayed in the apartment on high alert for an entire day.
They just waited for whatever Ethan Sterling was going to do.
They had thought Ethan Sterling would pull some major move, but unexpectedly everything stayed calm and quiet, without the slightest ripple, and it inevitably made people wonder whether Ethan Sterling was planning to do nothing at all.
Claire Bennett was full of doubt.
Logically speaking, after Naomi Pierce did something like that, there was no way she would just let it go.
What exactly did Naomi Pierce and Ethan Sterling want to do?
...
A day passed quickly.
The next day, after Julian Sterling left for work, Claire Bennett, still fast asleep, was awakened by a burst of doorbell ringing, and she groggily struggled out of bed.
Maybe it was the people Sean Shaw had found.
The moment she opened the door, she saw two young men in uniform standing outside, holding up a sheet of paper in front of her.
"Claire Bennett, you are suspected of intentional assault. We are now placing you under arrest."
Hearing that, all of Claire Bennett's sleepiness vanished instantly.
She widened her eyes. So it had finally come!
So this was the method Ethan Sterling was using—he had actually sent people to arrest her.
After a moment of panic, Claire Bennett quickly steadied herself. She wasn't going to do something pointless like resist.
Glancing down at the short-sleeved shirt and shorts pajamas she was wearing, Claire Bennett said calmly, "Wait a second, I'll get a jacket."
"Please cooperate with our work!"
Claire Bennett sighed and could only obediently leave with them.
the Lake Geneva detention center.
In the empty room, there was only a lone chair. Claire Bennett was sitting on it. They hadn't taken away her phone, which counted as preferential treatment for her.
At this moment, she was calling Sean Shaw for help.
The phone had only rung twice when it was quickly picked up.
Before Sean Shaw could speak, Claire Bennett said first, "Sean, I've been arrested. Hurry up and bail me out. Also, did you hire the lawyer I told you to get?"
"I can't get there..." Sean Shaw's voice carried a helplessness she had never heard before.
"Why?"
Sean Shaw's tone was low. "My car broke down."
Claire Bennett frowned and said, "You have so many cars. Are they all broken down? Couldn't you take some other kind of transportation? You could at least take a cab."
Sean Shaw let out a heavy sigh, his voice even more helpless. He laughed at himself and said, "I'd like to, but I'd need the chance to do that first."
Claire Bennett: "..."
Fine, Sean Shaw probably wasn't doing it on purpose. Maybe something had come up with the Shaw family recently and Sean Shaw couldn't make it over. Having the lawyer come first would work too.
She took a deep breath and said patiently, "Then have the lawyer come first. Come when you have time, or don't come at all."
Sean Shaw: "There is no lawyer..."
Before he could finish speaking, Claire Bennett realized how serious the situation was.
Her face darkened, and she cut Sean Shaw off, scolding, "Sean Shaw! I'm not joking with you. I've really been locked up!"
"I don't want this either!" Sean Shaw said miserably. "I don't fucking know if all the bad luck from my last eight lifetimes got dumped on me today! Early this morning, when I went out, my tire got blown out by nails!!!"
"Then I switched cars, and that tire got punctured too! After checking, I found out some goddamn bastard had scattered nails outside my door. I thought, fine, then I'll take a cab, but then..."
"But when I tried to get a cab, I found no one was taking my ride request. In the end I could only scan a shared bike and ride twenty kilometers to the airport, and then I missed my flight!"
Claire Bennett: "..."
"And that's not even the end of it!" Sean Shaw wailed, then continued, "After I got to the airport, they said there was a problem with my passport and held me for inspection for several hours. Then later I got a call from the lawyer saying he'd broken his leg and couldn't come, and told me to find somebody better..."
Sean Shaw complained while passionately cursing nonstop. It really did sound pitiful.
After listening, Claire Bennett's mouth twitched slightly. "Mr. Shaw, are you messing with me?"
