Chapter 153
She Wants to Divorce Him
Knock knock, Claire Bennett rapped on the study door.
"Come in." Julian Sterling's deep voice sounded from behind the door.
Thinking about what was coming next, Claire Bennett suddenly felt nervous. She steadied herself a little, then pushed the door open and walked in.
Behind the huge solid-wood desk in the office, Julian Sterling was sitting upright in his chair.
An open laptop sat in front of him, and he looked like he was in the middle of handling work.
Today Julian Sterling was wearing the white dress shirt Claire Bennett had seen when she got off work. His sleeves were rolled to his wrists, revealing a small stretch of honey-colored skin. Even without any expensive accessories, he still looked elegant and distinguished.
Claire Bennett stood at the doorway admiring him for a moment. Only when Julian Sterling lifted his eyes and looked over did she walk in uneasily and sit down across from him.
After sitting down, she suddenly didn't know what to say.
So strange. She normally wasn't someone who stammered like this, but now that she was facing Julian Sterling, she didn't even feel like herself anymore. What on earth was going on?
While Claire Bennett was still racking her brains for something to say, Julian Sterling spoke first. In a calm tone, he asked, "How did meeting Sean Shaw go?"
"It... it was pretty good..."
Why was Julian Sterling suddenly asking about her meeting with Sean Shaw?
After she said that, the air fell quiet again.
Claire Bennett curled her feet inside her slippers, her hands clenched nervously. After a good while, she finally forced out a sentence. "Um... did you eat dinner yet?"
Hearing that, Julian Sterling's mood improved a little.
At least Claire Bennett had some conscience. She knew how heartless it was to ditch him and go meet Sean Shaw, and she had the decency to ask whether he'd eaten.
Julian Sterling's gaze softened as he said, "I did. I ate out."
Claire Bennett said, "Oh. Were you busy at work today?"
Julian Sterling said, "Not too bad."
Claire Bennett asked again, "What did you have for lunch?"
"Takeout."
Claire Bennett thought for a moment. "Then did you run into any problems at work?"
Julian Sterling's eyes narrowed slightly, and he finally realized something was off.
Claire Bennett was asking in such detail about everything that had happened to him today, even asking how he was feeling. What exactly was her purpose?
Suddenly, Ruby Sterling's words surfaced in Julian Sterling's mind.
Claire Bennett and Sean Shaw had rekindled their old romance, and now she wanted to test the waters with him?
Julian Sterling's expression darkened instantly.
He fixed Claire Bennett with a cold, sharp stare, and Claire Bennett, who was still desperately trying to think of ways to show concern for Julian Sterling's daily life, froze. Panic suddenly rose in her heart.
Why was Julian Sterling looking at her like that?
Claire Bennett let her gaze sweep around the study, and only then did she realize he seemed to be seriously working. Had she come in and interrupted him?
She had heard that a CEO's assistant was very busy, always on call even after work hours.
If they couldn't finish their work, there was a good chance they'd be reprimanded by their boss.
Sure enough, those online Q&As were totally unreliable.
Claire Bennett gave an awkward smile, stood up, and said, "Then I'll go out first and not disturb your work. Take your time."
After saying that, Claire Bennett backed out.
After closing the door, Claire Bennett slapped her forehead.
The study fell quiet, but the heavy air around Julian Sterling still hadn't lifted. His mood had been affected by what had just happened.
Claire Bennett's guilty look convinced him that she no longer wanted to continue this contract marriage.
She and Sean Shaw had rekindled their old feelings, and now she wanted to divorce him!
Julian Sterling's brows drew tightly together, and a growing irritation gradually spread through him.
