Chapter 172
The Flowers Were from Julian Sterling
But if he was arriving right away, she had to hurry downstairs.
With that thought, she immediately grabbed her bag and went downstairs to wait for Julian Sterling.
By the time she got downstairs, Claire Bennett could already see Julian Sterling's car there. She walked over and opened the door.
After the car started moving, Claire belatedly sensed Julian Sterling's unusual silence. Although he usually wasn't very talkative, today was really a little abnormal.
She stole a glance at him and felt like he seemed to be in a bad mood.
Could it be... he was still angry about that?
Was he really that petty?
When Claire thought about how she'd spent the whole day overthinking because he hadn't replied to her messages, she couldn't help getting a little angry too.
She said unhappily, "Didn't you say last night that you weren't angry because of the thing I gave you? You ignored my messages on purpose today, didn't you? Do you know I waited all day for you to reply to me!"
Julian Sterling's brows knitted tightly.
He didn't know what Claire Bennett was thinking at all. To him, her refusing to accept the gift was the same as rejecting him, yet she was still acting as if nothing had happened, and could even ask him why he hadn't replied to her messages.
Wasn't this exactly what she wanted?
"Why did you refuse the flowers I sent you?" Julian Sterling asked.
Claire had been just about to settle the score with Julian Sterling, but when she heard that question, all the words of accusation she had instantly froze in her throat.
What!
Those flowers were actually from Julian Sterling?!
Claire was dumbfounded, so shocked that she couldn't speak for a long while.
Her mind was full of the memory of refusing that bouquet today. Looking again at Julian Sterling's tense, handsome face, he was obviously very unhappy about this matter.
Oh my God!
Claire covered her face, wishing she could travel back in time and strangle herself.
She seemed to have done something wrong. This was the first time Julian Sterling had ever given her something, and it had even been flowers, something with special meaning. How could she have refused them!
No wonder Julian Sterling hadn't replied to her messages today. If she had given Julian Sterling something and he had directly refused it, she would have felt awful too.
Claire hurriedly apologized. "I'm sorry. I didn't know the flowers were from you. I thought Ethan Sterling sent them, so I refused them right away."
"Ethan Sterling sent you flowers?" Julian Sterling said in a low voice.
"Uh... yeah." Claire was filled with regret. She looked at Julian Sterling and asked, "Then what about that bouquet from today?"
"I had someone throw it away."
"Ah... threw it away?"
Claire was so regretful she wanted to beat her chest and stomp her feet, as if she'd missed out on a hundred million dollars. The more she thought about it, the less willing she was to accept it. It felt as though she'd lost the love Julian Sterling had given her.
A moment later, Claire said, "Julian Sterling, I forgot to get something. Turn back."
Julian Sterling turned the car around and headed back to Sterling International.
Ten minutes later, his car stopped by the side of the road. Claire opened the door. "Wait for me here a second. I'll be right back."
After saying that, Claire quickly ran inside.
After entering Sterling International, she went straight to the trash bins in the back, wanting to see whether her bouquet was still there.
It was the first bouquet Julian Sterling had given her. Even if it had been thrown into the trash, she still had to get it back.
Claire didn't care about getting dirty. She rolled up her sleeves and started rummaging through the garbage, taking the trash out from inside.
The stench was overpowering, but she didn't care at all. She only hoped to see that bouquet of discarded roses in there. Very soon, her hands were smeared with filth.
Suddenly, someone yanked her hard. She turned around and saw Julian Sterling standing behind her.
His brows were tightly furrowed as he snapped, "What are you doing?"
She had already searched all the way to the bottom of the trash bin, but she still hadn't found that bouquet.
Actually, she had already known the flowers weren't there.
After all, that bouquet had been so big and conspicuous. Maybe the trash had already been taken away, and her flowers were gone too. She had missed the chance to develop things with Julian Sterling.
The more Claire thought about it, the sadder she became, and her eyes reddened. She looked utterly dejected.
She said gloomily, "I'm looking for the flowers you gave me. I thought they would definitely still be in the trash, but they're gone now. That was the first bouquet you ever gave me..."
Hearing Claire's despairing words, Julian Sterling pressed his thin lips together tightly.
At this moment, he deeply felt that, in Claire Bennett's eyes, the flowers he had given her were extremely important.
The gloomy mood he'd had all day vanished completely.
The icy look in Julian Sterling's eyes grew gentler and gentler. He stepped forward, took Claire's hand, and said softly, "Stop looking. If the flowers are gone, I can buy more."
After saying that, he led Claire back to the car.
Julian Sterling pulled tissues from the car and carefully, seriously wiped the dirt off Claire's hands. Claire lowered her eyes to look at him, and a wave of warmth flowed through her heart, while she felt even more remorseful about what she had done.
If only she hadn't refused that bouquet.
Seeing the guilty, regretful expression on Claire's face, Julian Sterling's eyes flickered.
He started the car and drove away.
On the way, Claire was unusually silent. Just then, Julian Sterling suddenly turned the wheel, pulled over to the side of the road, and got out after opening the door.
Claire came back to herself and looked out the window in surprise.
Julian Sterling's tall, straight figure was walking toward a flower shop by the roadside. Her pupils contracted slightly, and a strange feeling surged up in her heart.
