Chapter 195
She Went to Celebrate
At the Sterling family home in New York.
After seeing Old Master Sterling hang up the phone, Evelyn Sterling found that his face was still dark with anger and said, "You're still mad? Didn't Julian always refuse to get married before? Even though he took it upon himself to get married this time, at the end of the day he's already married. Isn't that a good thing?"
Old Master Sterling let out a cold snort. "What I wanted was for him to marry a rich young lady from one of New York's prominent families, not that kind of woman!"
"If you ask me, those rich young ladies from New York aren't all that great either. Did you forget what happened to the fourth one? He's still lying in the hospital now..." Evelyn Sterling couldn't help muttering.
Hearing that, Old Master Sterling's expression turned ugly.
The topic seemed to be taboo between them. Grief appeared on both their faces, and neither of them continued.
A moment later, Old Master Sterling said, "Anyway, Julian just said that he's already divorced that woman. Looks like he knows what bastard thing he did. I'll wait and see how he behaves."
Evelyn Sterling sighed. The marriage had ended just like that, and she hadn't even met her granddaughter-in-law yet.
She gently persuaded him, "You haven't even met that girl, so how do you know she's no good? Why don't we find some time to meet her?"
Old Master Sterling remained stubborn, snorting coldly. "Meet her for what? Isn't she just some woman who exhausted every trick she had trying to marry into a wealthy family? What's there to see? Better not to meet her. It'll only annoy me if I do, and they're going to cut ties anyway!"
"Sigh... honestly, you!" Evelyn Sterling could only let out a heavy sigh.
...
Claire Bennett was so drunk that she fell asleep.
Ruby Sterling laid her flat on the sofa and even kindly changed her into a set of her own pajamas.
At that moment, Ruby felt lucky that she had brought Claire back to her own detached house. If Claire had stayed at the bar, it would have been far too dangerous.
After getting everything settled, Ruby lay down on the other side of the sofa too.
The next day, the morning light streamed in through the huge floor-to-ceiling windows. Claire's brows knit slightly, then she covered her head and sat up.
She looked around a little blankly, and the events of last night slowly came back to her. After Julian Sterling left, she packed up her things, then, feeling a little depressed, went out to drink herself drunk.
Later, Ruby contacted her, and the two of them went back to Ruby's detached house together.
Before she fell asleep, she had also talked with Ruby quite a bit. What was it Ruby had said again?
Just as Claire was spacing out, Ruby also woke up groggily.
When she saw Claire sitting there with a grave expression, her foggy mind instantly cleared. She hurriedly sat up in a rush. "Claire, you're awake. How are you feeling?"
Claire came back to herself. "I'm fine. Thank you for staying with me last night."
Ruby stared at her for a while. She really couldn't see anything unusual, which meant Claire hadn't gone out drinking last night because she divorced her brother—she had gone to celebrate!
Thinking of her pitiful big brother, Ruby's heart ached for him again.
Since this whole thing had been a mistake from the start, then let that mistake end here.
Ruby looked at Claire and said sincerely, "Claire, you fell asleep last night, and I still haven't apologized to you. I'm sorry! I lied to you!"
Since they were going to separate, Ruby felt she should properly apologize to Claire.
After saying that, she looked at Claire with eyes full of guilt.
"What did you lie to me about?" Claire asked in confusion.
Ruby looked at Claire and asked suspiciously, "You... do you still remember what I said last night?"
"You said Julian Sterling is your brother..." Claire said with some hesitation. Then she looked up at Ruby. "Your brother's driver?"
Ruby: "..."
So everything she said had been for nothing?
"What I mean is!" Ruby thought for a moment, then finally swallowed the words back down. "No, that's what I meant."
Anyway, things were already like this. So what if Claire found out that Julian Sterling was President Sterling? Maybe it would only make her even angrier and speed up their divorce.
This secret could just stay buried in her heart forever.
Claire didn't grow suspicious. As if thinking of something, she glanced at the time, then stood up and asked, "Where's the bathroom in your place? And where are my clothes from last night?"
"I tossed them in the washing machine. What do you need them for?"
"Work. They aren't still wet, are they?"
Ruby's mouth dropped open in shock, and for a moment she couldn't say a word.
Work?! She hadn't expected Claire to still be in the mood to go to work. It seemed she really wasn't affected at all!
Sure enough, the only injured one was her brother. She had screwed over her own big brother.
Ruby said weakly, "There's a dryer."
"That's great. Let me use it."
There were new personal toiletries in the detached house. After changing clothes and washing up, Claire headed out to work.
In the cab, Claire sat in the back seat, staring blankly out the window at the scenery constantly retreating behind her.
Recently, the design drafts for Maison Verne's new product line had all come out, and she was preparing for the new product launch event. Work would gradually get busier too. Rather than resting at home, she might as well go to work and keep herself busy.
Maybe that way she could avoid thinking about this matter.
On the way, Claire was thinking about how she was going to come up with the 5 million breach-of-contract penalty, because she was the one who had asked for the divorce, so that meant she was the one who had broken the contract. She had always been an honest person who kept her word.
The first person she thought of asking to borrow it from was Sean Shaw.
