Ch. 216 - Going to Kelsey Lee Was a Mistake

Chapter 216

Going to Kelsey Lee Was a Mistake

"Pffft!!!" Ruby Sterling choked on her own spit.

It took Ruby quite a while to recover.

Mrs. Sterling had gone to Kelsey Lee and asked her to take her place as Julian Sterling's younger sister. Just what had Kelsey said to make Claire Bennett misunderstand things so badly?

For the sake of her own reputation, Ruby felt she had to get to the bottom of it.

She asked repeatedly, "What did you say? Julian Sterling's sister doesn't like you? I feel like you're so outstanding—his sister shouldn't dislike you, right?"

Thinking of those things Kelsey Lee had said, Claire's eyes turned cold.

She wouldn't badmouth his family in front of Julian Sterling, but Ruby Sterling was her best friend, so of course she had nothing to hide from her.

Claire said, "I don't think I misunderstood, because she clearly told me that I'm not good enough for Julian Sterling."

She admitted that Julian Sterling really was excellent, but she wasn't that bad either, was she?

When Ruby heard that, she nearly exploded.

At that moment, she suddenly felt that going to Kelsey Lee had been a mistake. How could she have said those things to Claire Bennett?

She had some nerve!

Ruby had actually seen a few things before at the Sterling family home. She had seen Kelsey Lee secretly hiding in a corner and stealing glances at Julian Sterling, though at the time she hadn't thought much of it.

Now that she connected the dots, could it be that woman had her eye on her brother?

At the thought of that, Ruby felt furious.

She had meant to help Claire Bennett and Julian Sterling, and instead she had somehow gone and found Claire Bennett a love rival. She really deserved to die!

Claire continued, "Later, when I was about to leave, she even invited me to go tomorrow to Miss Lewis's girls' gathering. I thought it was a trap, so I didn't agree."

Tomorrow? Miss Lewis's girls' gathering?

Ruby's eyes shifted as though she had remembered something.

Wasn't tomorrow's girls' gathering that socialite party organized by Hazel Lewis and those wealthy young ladies from Chicago?

She had always studied in New York before and rarely came to Chicago. Recently she had been active in Chicago, and it seemed the socialites there had gotten wind of it and specially sent over an invitation, wanting to cozy up to her, but she had been too busy and forgotten all about it.

Could Kelsey Lee be trying to get Claire Bennett to go too, so she could make trouble over something?

"Claire, wait a second—don't hang up..." After Ruby said that, there was no sound on the other end.

Claire waited patiently for five minutes.

Before long, Ruby's voice came through the phone again. Sounding a little excited, she asked, "Claire, are you free tomorrow? Come with me somewhere."

Since Ruby was asking, there was no way Claire would refuse.

"Tomorrow's Sunday, so of course I'm free."

"Good. I'll come pick you up tomorrow."

After hanging up, Ruby clenched her teeth, her face full of resentment.

She had just gone to ask the maid, and the invitation to that girls' gathering had actually vanished without a trace. After searching around, she asked Mrs. Sterling and only then found out that she had given the invitation to Kelsey Lee!

When Ruby pressed her on why she had given it to Kelsey Lee, Mrs. Sterling actually didn't think there was anything wrong with it. She even said that since Ruby had never liked attending those kinds of gatherings anyway, what was wrong with letting Kelsey go and broaden her horizons?

It infuriated her to death!

She hadn't expected Kelsey Lee to be so capable. Even her own parents had been won over by her and didn't think there was anything wrong with her at all.

Claire Bennett was the only sister-in-law she recognized in her heart. How could she possibly let Kelsey Lee bully Claire Bennett? She had to help Claire get her dignity back, and while she was at it, warn Kelsey Lee too.

It was just that... Kelsey Lee had seen her before. Even though it had been many years ago, if she showed up with Claire Bennett and Kelsey recognized her, then there'd be no fun in it.

Ugh, what should she do?

Very quickly, Ruby came up with an idea. She grinned and snorted inwardly: she was going to let Kelsey Lee see who the real deal was!

...

The next day, Ruby drove to Claire Bennett's detached house right on time.

After Claire opened the car door and saw Ruby in the driver's seat, she stared in shock for quite a while. She narrowed her eyes and studied her carefully for a moment before asking hesitantly, "Ruby?"

Ruby, sitting in the sports car, had long wavy hair, incredibly heavy makeup on her face, and a sexy bodycon dress on. With her perfect features, it looked strikingly glamorous, but compared to Ruby's usual style, it was the complete opposite extreme.

No wonder Claire didn't dare recognize her.

Ruby took off the sunglasses on the bridge of her nose, revealing a pair of eyes lined with thick false lashes. "Yep, it's me. This is my new look. Pretty, right?"

If she weren't afraid that woman Kelsey Lee would recognize her, why would she ever have made herself look like this?

But wasn't this perfect?

The uglier she looked, the more it would bring out Claire's beauty later.

"..." Claire didn't know what to say. As long as Ruby liked it, that was fine.

She pulled open the door and sat in the passenger seat.

Ruby glanced at her. "Why are you dressed like that?"

"What's wrong with this?" Claire was a little confused. She looked down at her clothes. Ruby hadn't told her where they were going, so of course she had prioritized comfort.

"Of course there's something wrong!" She knew these women's gatherings best—what you wore was the most important thing, or else you were very likely to be mocked.

The clothes on her own body might be ugly, but they were all expensive designer brands. If Claire Bennett went dressed the way she was now, she would definitely be laughed at.

"We're going somewhere first."

After saying that, Ruby stepped on the gas, and the car quickly drove off.

Claire discovered that the place Ruby had brought her to was actually Vivian Yu Studio, the same place they had gone before for Naomi Pierce's engagement banquet.

Vivian Yu was in the shop today, and after seeing Ruby, she took quite a while to identify her before she dared to speak.

"Oh my, Miss Sterling! What on earth are you—"

"Don't worry about me. I'm leaving my bestie to you. You have to turn her into a standard, fully qualified socialite heiress for me."

After saying that, Ruby gave Claire a shove forward.
