Chapter 24
You're Not Really Julian Sterling Anyway
Claire Bennett spent the entire afternoon anxiously waiting before Julian Sterling finally came back.
The moment she heard the door open, she sprang up and hurried over. When she saw Julian Sterling, she took the coat from his hand and asked, "Well? What did the real Julian Sterling say?"
Julian Sterling glanced at Claire Bennett coolly.
With a subtle expression, he walked over and sat down on the couch. Claire Bennett had already been on edge for ages, and now seeing Julian Sterling acting all mysterious made her even more frantic.
"Come on, say something already. What happened exactly? He didn't find out about this, did he?"
Claire Bennett had never done anything bad in her life, and now that she'd found someone to impersonate someone else and bluff people with it, she felt incredibly guilty.
Julian Sterling glanced at her and said blandly, "So what if he did?"
He found out?
Claire Bennett's face went pale in an instant. She had already imagined that terrible outcome, and as for how to handle it, she would go to him in person and apologize.
Seeing Claire Bennett scared so badly that all color drained from her face, Julian Sterling found it very amusing.
So timid, yet she still dared to have him go out and scam people for her.
He stopped teasing her. Just as he was about to say something, he suddenly heard Claire Bennett say, "How about... I go find him tomorrow and apologize? Maybe if he sees that I know I was wrong and want to make it right, he won't hold it against me."
Julian Sterling gave a cold snort. "Not necessarily."
"How would you know? You're not really Julian Sterling anyway. He's the president of a major corporation. Broad-minded. Do you really think he's that petty? He probably wouldn't even take something this small to heart, okay."
"Do you know him better, or do I?" One sentence from Julian Sterling shut Claire Bennett right up.
She let out a faint sigh. Fine, she really didn't know that Julian Sterling at all.
Claire Bennett sat down on the couch dejectedly and said with a troubled look, "Then what do we do now? We definitely can't keep pretending to be him."
The premise of Ruby Sterling's idea before was that the real Julian Sterling was away on a business trip overseas, and Ruby could help on the side. Who would suspect it was fake?
But now the man himself was back!
That fake mother-and-son pair, Tanya Sterling and Ethan Sterling, would definitely be dying to invite him to the engagement party.
At that point, she probably wouldn't be going there to slap them in the face. She'd be going there to make a fool of herself.
Julian Sterling said leisurely, "I have a way."
Claire Bennett immediately perked up and looked at him. "What? What way?"
Julian Sterling leaned his tall frame back, a faint curve on his lips, and his eyes seemed to say: Let's see how you behave.
Claire Bennett instantly got the hint. She stood up and poured Julian Sterling a glass of water, then came back and eagerly started massaging his shoulders, attending to him with great care. "Stop keeping me in suspense and tell me already."
After enjoying Claire Bennett's service for a while, Julian Sterling finally said slowly, "He's only back for two days. He'll be leaving on another business trip very soon, so you don't need to worry."
"Really?" Claire Bennett was overjoyed.
"Mm."
Everything had cleared up like the sky after a storm. At once, all of Claire Bennett's worries vanished, and she was even in the mood to cook again.
The next day, Claire Bennett went to Sterling International.
She planned to have a proper argument with Ethan Sterling, and she had also brought all the evidence that he had approved the plan.
But after looking all over, she still couldn't find Ethan Sterling, so she called him. He seemed to be busy with something. He barely gave her a hard time at all, just said to proceed according to the original plan, then hurriedly ended the call.
Claire Bennett was thrilled and felt that her luck was unbelievably good. Even the heavens seemed to be helping her. Not only would that Julian Sterling be leaving again soon, even work was going especially smoothly.
Upstairs at the Sterling International building, Ethan Sterling sat in the conference room with an impatient expression, looking especially irritated.
He had arrived very early today because he wanted to see Julian Sterling, but Marcus Reed said he was in a meeting, so all Ethan could do was wait patiently.
The relationships within the Sterling family were tangled and complicated. He had several uncles, but none of them could compare to Julian Sterling.
He knew that the person Old Mr. Sterling valued most now was Julian Sterling, so even though he wasn't a very patient person, he still had to keep waiting patiently if he wanted to latch onto Julian Sterling.
And during all that, Claire Bennett had the nerve to call him too, bothering him over trivial nonsense and asking about the mural. How could any of that possibly be more important than seeing Julian Sterling!
So he immediately brushed Claire Bennett off and told her not to bother him again.
Downstairs at Sterling International, while Claire Bennett was standing on the scaffolding sketching out lines, Naomi Pierce showed up again.
She looked up, saw Claire Bennett standing on the scaffolding painting, and her brows knitted tightly as displeasure showed on her face.
Pointing at Claire Bennett, Naomi Pierce ordered rudely, "Claire Bennett! How dare you make decisions on your own? I order you to take all of this down right now and repaint it from scratch!"
Claire Bennett's hand paused on the pen, and she rolled her eyes.
This woman was seriously annoying.
She climbed down from the scaffolding and stood in front of Naomi Pierce, then looked at her and asked, "What exactly is your position?"
Hearing Claire Bennett's words, Naomi Pierce gave a scornful snort.
She had thought Claire Bennett was going to say something important.
Who would've thought she was asking about her position? She was Ethan Sterling's future fiancée, the future Mrs. Sterling! And also his assistant—far better than an unemployed drifter like Claire Bennett.
Naomi Pierce said smugly, "I'm Ethan's assistant. I have the right to supervise your work!"
"Oh, so just an assistant..." Claire Bennett smiled meaningfully. In an unhurried tone, she said, "Too bad Ethan Sterling already approved the plan with me. You're just a little assistant, and you're dreaming of stepping on your superior's head? Stop spouting bullshit here and polluting the environment."
