Ch. 28 - Claire Bennett Wasn't Pregnant

Chapter 28

Claire Bennett Wasn't Pregnant

Claire Bennett said bitterly, "Who said that? I'm going to find them and settle the score!"

They actually dared to spread rumors and smear her reputation.

Julian Sterling's handsome face stiffened. He remembered that Marcus Reed really hadn't said it was Claire Bennett at the time; he'd only said that someone had gone to find Ethan Sterling. Subconsciously, he'd assumed it was Claire Bennett.

Looking at Claire Bennett's furious expression, he pressed his lips together and said nothing.

Naturally, there was no way he could rat Marcus Reed out.

Before he could speak, Claire Bennett used her good hand to pull out her phone, opened the text Ruby Sterling had sent her, and held it up in front of him.

"Here, look. Ruby was the one who found out about Ethan Sterling and that other woman. She set up the whole show, and that's why I went to watch. I didn't lie to you."

After Julian Sterling finished reading the text, he realized he really had misunderstood.

The person who'd gone to settle accounts with Ethan Sterling that day really wasn't Claire Bennett. It was all because he'd had doubts about Ethan Sterling's character and come to the wrong conclusion himself.

So Claire Bennett wasn't pregnant.

It seemed there really had never been any clear evidence that she was pregnant. It was all because he'd instinctively thought that since Claire Bennett and Ethan Sterling had dated for three years, a pregnancy would be perfectly normal too.

"I'm obviously still a virgin, and I got mistaken for being pregnant. This is seriously so unfair. Who's so immoral that they'd spread rumors about me being pregnant and slander me like this?"

Claire Bennett still felt terribly wronged and couldn't help complaining.

Julian Sterling: "..." It seemed like the person being immoral was him.

He steadied himself, looked at Claire Bennett, and asked, "You dated Ethan Sterling for three years. Did you two never sleep together?"

"No!"

Claire Bennett couldn't help thinking, was that why Naomi Pierce had been able to seduce him away so easily?

Good thing she hadn't given herself to him. Otherwise, it definitely would have felt even worse than getting bitten by a dog.

But discussing her ex-boyfriend in front of another man—especially something like this—seemed like a very awkward thing to do. Embarrassment appeared on her face, and she looked away uncomfortably.

The darkness in Julian Sterling's eyes gradually faded. Looking at Claire Bennett with a gentler expression, he said, "Get some good rest. You don't need to worry about anything else. I'll handle it for you."

Claire Bennett wanted to ask him how he was going to handle it, but Julian Sterling had already walked out.

Outside in the hallway, Marcus Reed came hurrying over.

"Mr. Sterling, we've already found out. Someone was on the overpass last night, and we've already taken him into custody. How do you plan to deal with it?"

Julian Sterling's face turned cold and severe. "Who was it?"

"Kevin Parker, a manager in Sterling International's planning department."

Julian Sterling had no impression of this person at all. Kevin Parker's position wasn't high enough to get anywhere near him. But how had Claire Bennett offended him enough for him to make a move meant to kill her?

"Where is he?" Julian Sterling asked coldly.

Marcus Reed knew that Julian Sterling intended to interrogate Kevin Parker personally. He immediately led the way for Julian Sterling, and the two of them left the hospital together.

Inside the hospital room, Claire Bennett's hand had been wrapped in a thick cast. The doctor had said it would help it heal faster. She took out her phone with one hand, wanting to send Ruby Sterling a message to tell her that she'd been injured.

There was a knock at the door. Thinking it was a nurse or that Julian Sterling had come back, she didn't even look up before saying, "Come in."

"Claire."

Hearing the familiar voice, Claire Bennett's body stiffened. Her pupils shrank, and she looked up toward the doorway.

A middle-aged man stood outside the door. He was dressed in a sharp suit and looked strikingly handsome, full of masculine charm. Time seemed especially kind to him, not having left any marks on his face.

There was affection in his eyes as he looked at her with concern.

The moment she saw who it was, Claire Bennett's expression quickly darkened, and in a chilly tone that wasn't very polite, she said, "What are you doing here?"

The man walked in. "I just happened to be in Chicago. When I heard you'd been admitted to the hospital, I came by to see you."

As he spoke, his gaze fell on Claire Bennett's arm, and a trace of heartache flashed through his eyes.

Looking at that expression in his eyes, Claire Bennett found it especially ironic.

Even now, she still couldn't forget that this man had abandoned her and her mother.

He was happily in love with his second wife and had even had a daughter with her. He had probably long since forgotten all about the wife and daughter he'd once had.

Now her mother was still lying in a hospital bed, yet he hadn't gone to see her even once again.

Every bit of the medical bills had been earned by her own hard work!

Thinking of this, her gaze gradually turned cold and hard. It was as if a protective barrier had sprung up around her, and with distant detachment she said, "Thank you for your concern, Mr. Bennett. You should go. I'm fine."

Victor Bennett let out a sigh, his expression somewhat bitter.

He hadn't expected that after all these years, Claire still wouldn't forgive him. Her temper was like his—stubborn and straightforward.

Things between them weren't the way Claire Bennett thought they were.

But Claire Bennett was unwilling to hear his explanation. She had been angry with him for a long time, refusing to return to New York, refusing to return to the Bennett family, and now she had even run off to Chicago.

After standing there in silence for a moment, Victor Bennett finally said softly, "Then I'll go. If there's anything you need help with, call me."

Claire Bennett responded with a distracted "Mm."

After another moment of silence, Victor Bennett turned and left the room.

While he was waiting for the elevator, the doors opened, and a woman walked out.

It was Naomi Pierce.

When she heard that Claire Bennett had been rushed to the hospital, she'd hurried over to see whether she was dead yet.

Seeing Victor Bennett outside the elevator, Naomi Pierce's eyes widened in shock. She hadn't expected to see him here.
