Chapter 296
The Right to Pursue Claire Bennett
Claire Bennett was a little nervous. Her mind kept spinning: Had he changed his number? Would he blame her for leaving without saying goodbye all those years ago?
While Claire was worrying, the call connected.
A low, magnetic voice came from the other end. "Hello."
Claire suddenly paused, and for a moment she didn't know what to say.
Before she could speak, the person on the other end had already let out a snort and said, "Claire Bennett! You actually still know how to call me? I thought you died somewhere out there. What, your brain finally started working again and you finally remembered me?"
"Zane Cole, I'm sorry."
When Zane on the other end heard Claire apologize so seriously, all the things he had been about to keep cursing at her with got swallowed back down at once.
He coughed lightly, then asked in a somewhat tense voice, "Did something happen to you? With how completely you broke with the Bennett family back then, you wouldn't be calling me if nothing was wrong."
Claire said sincerely, "Could I ask you for a favor? The hospital said my mother's condition has improved somewhat, and they suggested I coordinate with traditional Chinese medicine treatment. Don't worry. I won't delay a single cent of the fees that should be paid."
Hearing that, Zane on the other end instantly blew up.
"Claire Bennett!! No matter what, we grew up together. In other people's words, we were childhood sweethearts! And you're actually bringing up money with me? Do we not mean anything to each other at all? You heartless thing!"
Hearing Zane's tone, Claire's eyes stung a little.
She hadn't expected that even though she had unilaterally cut off contact with him, not only did he not blame her, he was even still like this, just as he had been before.
The Bennett family and the Cole family were old family friends. The Cole family was a family of traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, and as the Cole family's only son, Zane had inherited the Cole family's outstanding medical skill. He was quite well known in New York's wealthy social circle, and by now he was already fully capable of standing on his own.
The two of them had also grown up together, and they had always been very close since childhood.
When they were little, they were always horsing around together. Claire felt that there was a friendship between them that went beyond the ordinary.
Zane's familiar way of speaking made her feel as though she had gone back to the past.
Actually, she had felt a little sad when she stopped contacting Zane back then, but at the time she had heard that the Cole family was arranging a marriage alliance for him. No matter how close they were, she was still a woman after all, and maybe Zane's future wife would mind her existence, so she simply stopped keeping in touch.
"All right then! I won't talk money with you." Claire said sincerely, "If my mother really can wake up, I'll work like an ox and horse to properly repay you."
After saying that, Zane seemed to mutter something.
Claire didn't hear it clearly.
He asked, "When are you coming back to New York? Bring me to see Auntie's condition first."
"Mm... the day after tomorrow, I guess. I'll contact you once I get to New York."
"Okay."
...
New York, the Cole family.
The man curled up on the sofa was wearing a pure black bathrobe. He stared at the disconnected phone, looking a little dazed, with complicated emotions surfacing in his eyes.
Claire Bennett had finally been willing to contact him!
Back then, when his family had wanted to arrange a marriage alliance for him, after what had happened to Claire's mother, Claire was naturally not on the Cole family's list. Later, he realized that the effort he was able to make was far too slight. After Claire left, he worked furiously, climbing higher and farther, and now he had finally taken control of the Cole family.
From now on, no one could interfere with any of his decisions anymore.
He also now had the right to pursue Claire Bennett!
A fierce determination shone in Zane's eyes.
Now that Claire Bennett was coming back this time, he definitely would not let her go again.
