Chapter 30
Be Careful Not to Capsize in the Gutter
"What's the use of barking like a dog? It'll only count if you actually bite me. I don't need a wheelchair, but if you do, I can buy you one."
"Who are you calling a dog!" Naomi Pierce said angrily.
"Obviously you. I've had my rabies shot, so I'm not scared of you."
Claire Bennett was usually soft-tempered, but she was like a little pufferfish—she would never let anyone gain the upper hand, and even now, lying in a hospital bed, she still had to beat Naomi Pierce with her mouth.
Naomi Pierce was indeed furious from being provoked by Claire Bennett.
She was mentally tough and quickly calmed down. Looking at Claire Bennett, she sneered, "So what if you're good with your mouth? Aren't you still lying in a hospital?"
Claire Bennett wouldn't be smug for many more days!
Naomi Pierce laughed a few times, then strode out with self-satisfied steps.
The annoying voice finally disappeared, and Claire Bennett felt like the whole world had become much quieter.
At that moment, the door to the hospital room opened again. Claire Bennett thought Naomi Pierce still wasn't done and had come back to sneer at her some more. Frowning impatiently, she said, "What exactly do you want..."
Before she could finish, she choked off the words. The person who came in was Julian Sterling.
Claire Bennett touched her nose and said awkwardly, "You're here."
Seeing Claire Bennett's agitated expression, Julian Sterling asked in a low voice, "What happened?"
"Naomi Pierce came by just now. That woman is unbelievably arrogant! I suspect she's the one who tampered with my rig. Once I recover, I definitely won't let her off," Claire Bennett said hatefully.
Hearing Claire Bennett's words, Julian Sterling's eyes darkened.
The one who had made the move was Kevin Parker, but he had done it under Naomi Pierce's orders.
He had just gone back to Sterling International and personally interrogated it out of him. He had Marcus Reed lock him up for the time being, but he still hadn't decided how to deal with him.
He had originally planned to send him to prison, but now he had changed his mind.
"Hungry?" Julian Sterling asked.
Prompted by him, Claire Bennett reached out and touched her stomach. Only then did she realize that getting angry had indeed burned up quite a bit of energy. She really was hungry.
Seeing that, Julian Sterling said, "I'll go buy you some food."
After saying that, he turned and went out.
Before long, Julian Sterling came back carrying several bags of dinner.
He opened the containers and set them in front of Claire Bennett. Seeing that her right arm was in a sling around her neck and that it wasn't convenient for her, he asked, "Do you need me to feed you?"
Claire Bennett was a little embarrassed, but her hand really wasn't convenient right now, and she wasn't very good at using her left hand either. She probably wouldn't be able to hold chopsticks, so she could only trouble him to help.
She nodded awkwardly. "Mm, sorry to trouble you."
Julian Sterling opened a pair of disposable chopsticks, picked up some food for Claire Bennett, and fed it into her mouth.
As she ate the food in her mouth, Claire Bennett suddenly felt her eyes sting a little.
She thought of Victor Bennett again.
Victor Bennett had doted on her when she was little. When she was picky and didn't want to eat, he would coax her softly, and would even personally feed her in a gentle voice.
But all of that changed after that woman appeared.
Now all of Victor Bennett's love probably belonged to that woman and her child, right?
Claire Bennett swallowed the bitterness in her heart together with the food.
A spoonful of rice was brought to her lips, pulling her back to reality. She turned to look at Julian Sterling. His handsome face was close at hand, patient and gentle.
Julian Sterling's features were exceptionally good-looking—deep-set and sculpted, with a high nose bridge. Although his rosy thin lips were pressed together, giving him a cold, unsmiling air, he still looked very handsome.
Especially the way he looked right now, focused and serious, made it hard not to feel moved.
The man feeding her now was this man!
A warm current welled up in Claire Bennett's heart, and it started pounding faster.
Her gloomy mood instantly improved.
Actually, Julian Sterling was a pretty good person.
She opened her mouth and ate the food he fed her, tossing Victor Bennett to the back of her mind.
The two of them didn't speak again. One helped while the other enjoyed it. Like an ordinary married couple, the scene looked unusually warm.
After Julian Sterling finished feeding Claire Bennett, he cleaned up the things and left.
Once he reached the hallway outside the hospital room, Julian Sterling took out his phone and dialed Marcus Reed. The call connected quickly, and Marcus Reed's voice came through. "Mr. Sterling."
"Release Kevin Parker."
"What?" Marcus Reed sounded astonished, not knowing why Julian Sterling suddenly wanted to let Kevin Parker go. Just earlier he had still been furious—he had kicked Kevin Parker twice and nearly made him cough up blood and die.
Before Marcus Reed could speak, Julian Sterling continued, "Also, send someone to follow him and monitor his every move. Report back at all times."
Hearing that, Marcus Reed instantly understood. Julian Sterling must have some plan. He answered, "Yes, I understand."
...
At this moment, Kevin Parker, who had been locked up, was bruised and swollen, with no one answering his cries to heaven or earth.
He felt that he was unbelievably unlucky!
When he had tampered with Claire Bennett's rig, he had clearly already destroyed all the surveillance footage. He had no idea why someone still managed to trace it back to him. That person really was remarkably capable.
