The Pretty Boy Wasn't Julian Sterling

"Zhouzhou, I'm going back to Chicago tomorrow. I'll have to trouble you to look after my mother during this time. Once I'm done being busy for a while, I'll come back to visit her."

Hearing Claire Bennett's words, Zane Cole curled his lips slightly.

Claire Bennett would come back then. That was exactly what he had hoped for from the start.

"Don't worry. With me here, Aunt Qing will definitely be fine," Zane Cole promised.

Claire Bennett trusted him. She looked at Zane Cole gratefully and said, "When I get the chance in the future, I'll definitely repay you properly."

Zane Cole muttered a little unhappily: what he wanted as her repayment was for her to be with him.

But it didn't matter. He still had plenty of chances.

Zane Cole's eyes darkened slightly as he said meaningfully, "If one day he treats you badly, remember to come back to me. I'll stand up for you."

Claire Bennett couldn't help laughing, and said in a trusting and certain tone, "You're overthinking it. He's a really good person. How could he possibly treat me badly?"

Looking at Claire Bennett, who was acting a little lovestruck right now, Zane Cole had the urge to roll his eyes.

Claire Bennett trusted Julian Sterling far too much. If she found out that Julian Sterling had lied to her, who knew how she would react.

Zane Cole knew that no matter what he said to Claire Bennett right now, she wouldn't believe him, so he stopped saying anything more.

Deep down, he firmly believed that sooner or later, Claire Bennett would turn back and come looking for him.

He had already waited so long in the past anyway, so a little more time now made no difference.

Suddenly, a voice calling out came from the doorway. "Claire!"

After hearing the voice, Claire Bennett quickly turned her head toward where it had come from.

Standing in the doorway was a well-dressed middle-aged couple. They were Sean Shaw's parents, Gregory Shaw and Irene Shaw, Claire Bennett's mother's older brother and sister-in-law.

Following behind the two of them was Sean Shaw. The three of them had heard that Claire Bennett had transferred Megan Shaw Bennett to another hospital, and had come to visit her at the hospital today.

Gregory Shaw and Irene Shaw had always treated Claire Bennett very well. When Claire Bennett had been busy working, it had always been her uncle and aunt who helped look after Megan Shaw Bennett, and she was extremely grateful to them.

Now that she saw them again, Claire Bennett immediately stepped forward affectionately. "Uncle, Auntie, what brings you here?"

"We heard that Manqing was transferred to another hospital. We've been busy these past two days and only had time to come today, so we came by to take a look."

Mrs. Shaw held Claire Bennett's hand and looked her up and down before sighing, "Claire, your aunt hasn't seen you in so long. You've gotten even prettier."

They had stayed in touch by phone before, but they had not seen each other for a long time. In Mrs. Shaw's memory, Claire Bennett was still that naive, innocent girl from back then.

Now that they were meeting again, she realized that Claire Bennett had changed far too much.

There was now an extra trace of toughness and unyielding strength in her eyes, making her look bright and striking. It was enough to show just how much hardship Claire Bennett had suffered out there.

Seeing Mrs. Shaw's loving gaze, unchanged as always, warmth flowed through Claire Bennett's heart, and she revealed a faint smile.

Zane Cole was fairly familiar with Mr. and Mrs. Shaw as well, so he stepped forward. "Mr. Shaw, Mrs. Shaw."

Looking at Zane Cole, the two quickly said, "Is that Zane? Long time no see."

"It's me," Zane Cole replied gently.

Mrs. Shaw said to Zane Cole a little embarrassedly, "The doctor told us about Manqing's condition before, but we figured you were busy, so we didn't want to trouble you."

In truth, the two of them had heard that in New York, people had to wait in line to see Zane Cole for treatment, and even some wealthy elite families of higher standing than theirs were no exception. Although they were fairly close to the Cole family, they still couldn't bring themselves to ask for special treatment.

They hadn't expected Claire Bennett to go to Zane Cole after all, nor had they expected Zane Cole to agree to help.

It seemed this child was still someone who valued loyalty and affection.

After chatting for a while, the group sat down in the hospital room.

At that point, Zane Cole also briefly explained Megan Shaw Bennett's current condition to Mr. and Mrs. Shaw. When the two heard that, with gradual treatment, there was a possibility she might wake up, delighted expressions appeared on their faces.

She remembered that Zane Cole and Claire Bennett had been very close since childhood. They had all thought that Claire Bennett and Zane Cole would become a couple someday, but they had never expected Claire Bennett to surprise them by ending up with someone like that.

When they heard Sean Shaw say that Claire Bennett had rushed into marriage with that person from the Sterling family, they had been utterly stunned.

Mrs. Shaw's solemn gaze fell on Megan Shaw Bennett lying unresponsive in the hospital bed, and a trace of melancholy appeared on her face.

Just then, another nurse came to ask Zane Cole to go help with something.

So he said goodbye to Mr. and Mrs. Shaw, then hurriedly left with the nurse.

After Zane Cole left, Mrs. Shaw looked at Claire Bennett.

Then she asked somewhat seriously, "Claire, when you said before that you were married, we didn't think much of it. We felt that it was normal for young people to get married once their feelings were there. But today Sean told us that you two had only known each other a short time before you rushed into marriage. We think you were still far too rash!"
