Chapter 359
The One Who Saved You Was Me
"It was Ethan Sterling..." Claire Bennett felt much less burdened now, and she'd already prepared herself for the worst. Now that Julian Sterling was asking about the details, she didn't hide anything anymore and could say it out loud easily.
Julian Sterling continued, "What exactly did Ethan Sterling tell you?"
Claire Bennett said in a muffled voice, "At the time, I asked the staff at the estate, and they said the owner of Kinley Estate had saved me. When I went to find out who the owner was, Ethan Sterling suddenly showed up. He was at the estate that day too, and he told me he was the one who saved me..."
Julian Sterling's brows knit even tighter.
He asked, "The reason you kept resisting getting close to me before—was it because you were afraid I'd find out about this?"
Claire Bennett took a deep breath and said dejectedly, "That's right. I was afraid that after you found out, you would... would stop wanting me."
Even though saying it herself now would lead to about the same result as before, at least she'd eased her own mental burden and no longer had to live in fear every day.
After Claire Bennett finished speaking, she lowered her head and quietly waited for Julian Sterling's judgment.
Time passed second by second.
Julian Sterling didn't say a word. A strange silence filled the room, and even the air around them seemed stiff and frozen.
Just when Claire Bennett couldn't take it anymore and wanted to speak, she suddenly heard a low laugh. It came from Julian Sterling.
He... was he laughing at her?
The situation Claire Bennett had imagined was that he would furiously question her, or make a huge scene and demand a divorce.
But she had never expected the situation in front of her now. Julian Sterling was actually laughing?
What was going on?
Could it be that the shock was too much for him, and he'd gone crazy?
"Julian Sterling, are you okay?" Claire Bennett looked at him and said worriedly, "You really mustn't get too upset. Actually, even though I was at fault in this matter, I didn't cheat on purpose, so you... you shouldn't take it too much to heart..."
She didn't know how to comfort Julian Sterling. Her words came out jumbled, and she could only do her best to find something to say to him.
She hadn't expected that even after ending up like this, she'd still have to comfort Julian Sterling. Claire Bennett felt like crying.
Why was she so miserable!
The curve at the corners of Julian Sterling's lips still hadn't faded. He stood up and walked over to Claire Bennett, then reached out and placed both hands on her shoulders. Looking down at her, he slowly said, "The person at Kinley Estate who saved you... was me."
The person at Kinley Estate who saved you was me! The one who saved you was me??
The person who saved her was Julian Sterling!!!
How could it possibly have been Julian Sterling? It couldn't have been him!
Claire Bennett didn't believe Julian Sterling at all. She even thought he was only saying that to comfort her. He had to be lying to her, right!
Maybe Julian Sterling didn't mind what had happened to her and still wanted to be with her, so that was why he was deceiving her like this.
Thinking of that made Claire Bennett want to cry even more.
Julian Sterling was a good man. It was her fault. She had done something that betrayed him.
Seeing that Claire Bennett didn't believe him, Julian Sterling looked a little helpless and emphasized again, "Claire, when I just said that I was the one who saved you at Kinley Estate, I wasn't comforting you, and I wasn't lying to you. Do you understand? I was the one who saved you, not Ethan Sterling."
Hearing this, Claire Bennett slowly raised her head to look at Julian Sterling, staring fixedly at his handsome face as the look in her eyes changed.
"You didn't lie to me?"
"No."
Claire Bennett's eyes widened, and an expression of extreme shock appeared on her face, as though she couldn't believe there could be such a reversal.
After taking a moment to process it, she finally asked, "You... why were you at Kinley Estate? I didn't run into you that day, so how could it have been..."
"That day I..." Julian Sterling paused for a moment, then continued, "That day I went to the estate on some business."
Suddenly, Claire Bennett thought of something else.
She murmured in confusion, "But those staff members said the owner of the estate saved me. You're the owner?"
With Julian Sterling's status, how could he possibly own an estate like that?
That wasn't something an ordinary person could afford. Just that piece of land alone was worth a fortune. Without absolute power and money, how could it be possible?
