Chapter 402
He Married a Good Girl
On the way back.
Claire Bennett sat in the passenger seat, her mind still turning over what had just happened.
Wes Mercer's girlfriend looked down on him for being just a lowly assistant. After hearing that, would Julian Sterling, who was also an assistant, feel burdened by it?
After thinking it over, Claire Bennett decided she should reassure him.
She cleared her throat lightly and asked, "After hearing what Wes said just now, do you have any thoughts?"
Julian Sterling kept his focus on the road and stole a glance at Claire Bennett. "What thoughts?"
If Claire Bennett's expression weren't so calm right now, he would have thought she'd discovered his true identity.
"I mean..." Claire Bennett racked her brains trying to figure out how to put it. After organizing her words, she continued, "Wes's girlfriend looks down on him for being an assistant, but actually... I think being an assistant is pretty good too. Every job deserves respect..."
At first Julian Sterling hadn't understood why Claire Bennett had suddenly started saying these things to him, but when he heard this much, he slowly realized.
Was Claire Bennett afraid he felt inferior because of his status as an assistant, so she was making her attitude clear and telling him she wouldn't look down on him for being an assistant?
For a moment, Julian Sterling didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
After a while, he asked, "But I don't have a house."
"It's fine if you don't have a house. We can earn the money and buy one ourselves! Your monthly salary isn't exactly low, and now that I've been promoted to manager, if we live a little frugally, we should still be able to buy a place in Chicago."
As if something had occurred to her, Claire Bennett asked, "Oh right, are houses expensive where your parents live? If they're not too expensive, we could buy a place nearby. That way it'd be easier to look after them in their daily lives."
For a moment, Julian Sterling didn't know what to say.
Most girls didn't like living with older people, but Claire Bennett had actually taken the initiative to suggest living near his parents so it would be convenient to take care of them.
In fact, his parents were still in very good health and didn't need them to look after them at all.
Claire Bennett was only being considerate of him and thinking things through for his sake.
Just then, the car pulled back into the apartment parking lot. After Julian Sterling brought it to a steady stop, he said, "If my parents knew their daughter-in-law was thinking of them like this, they'd definitely be very touched."
Claire Bennett curled her lips into a smile. It seemed Julian Sterling hadn't been affected, and that put her mind at ease.
Julian Sterling changed the subject and said, "But you don't need to worry about the house. Making money is what a man should do. You can rely on me. You don't have to work so hard."
Hearing Julian Sterling's words, Claire Bennett was suddenly speechless.
Ever since she had left the Bennett family, she had always fought her own way forward. She swallowed all her hardship in silence, and there was no way she could tell her uncle and aunt and make them worry about her situation. No one had ever said something like this to her before.
"Honey, you're so good to me."
It was the first time Julian Sterling had ever heard Claire Bennett call him that of her own accord. The sound of it felt like heavenly music to his ears. A faint ripple stirred in his heart, and both body and mind filled with pleasure. The way he looked at Claire Bennett grew even gentler.
Claire Bennett reached out and took hold of his big hand, her gaze firm as she said, "We'll make money together and buy a house. I won't let you struggle all by yourself."
Looking at Claire Bennett so full of determination, Julian Sterling didn't know for a moment whether he should tell her that they lacked for nothing.
In the end, he only reached out and patted her on the head.
He had married a good girl.
