Chapter 405
Can You Come See Me?
The hospital.
It was mealtime, and the patient in the next bed seemed to have already started eating. The tempting aroma of food drifted over. Wes Mercer lay motionless in his hospital bed, his stomach protesting nonstop from hunger, but the landlady had just said she'd bring his meal over, so all he could do was wait patiently.
I'm so hungry...
Wes felt like he really had it too hard. Not only had he gotten dumped because his identity was exposed, he'd also gotten into a car accident, and now he even had to go hungry.
He'd needed surgery the past two days and hadn't been able to look at his phone. Now he finally had a chance to pick it up and check it.
Wes picked up his phone from the bedside table.
It was completely quiet, without a single message, looking unusually clean.
Deep down, he had still been hoping that after Willow Lane found out he'd been in a car accident, she'd come see him. Sadly, he'd been dreaming too much. Willow Lane hadn't even sent a single message asking how he was.
Wes's heart ached. They had been together for two months, after all. Was there really not even a little feeling there?
He couldn't help calling Willow Lane.
The dialing tone came from the other end, and Wes's heart lifted with joy. His number hadn't been blocked.
In reality, Willow Lane really hadn't blocked Wes's number. She just knew he was President Sterling's assistant and had been thinking about whether she could use him to get in contact with President Sterling again. She hadn't expected Wes to misunderstand.
It took a long time before the call connected, and then Willow Lane's impatient voice came through.
"Why are you calling me? Didn't I already tell you not to keep bothering me?"
Not bother her!
When Wes heard that, the pain in his heart felt like ten thousand arrows piercing through it. She had clearly been the one who made the first move.
He had no father or mother and was an orphan, so it was easy for people to move him. Willow Lane's attentive concern had made him fall for her.
But now that she knew who he was, she was telling him not to bother her.
Wes gripped his phone tightly, his eyes already turning red.
His body had already been miserable enough, and now he was taking another heavy blow emotionally. Even as a grown man, Wes couldn't hold back his tears.
"I... I was in a car accident. Willow, can you come see me?" Wes asked, suppressing his emotions, his tone somewhat pleading.
"No time. I've been very busy lately. That's it."
Click, the call was disconnected.
Listening to the beeping tone by his ear, Wes let out a faint sigh.
Although the hospital bed had been separated by a curtain these past two days, whenever the nurses came in, he could still see that the patient next to him had family there with him, thoughtfully asking after his condition. He was the only one all alone with no one by his side.
And now Willow Lane had refused his request too.
He really shouldn't have clung to wishful thinking and believed Willow Lane would care at all about what they'd had.
It was time to give up completely.
Just as Wes felt all hope turn to ash, his curtain was pulled open, and he unexpectedly locked eyes with a girl.
The girl in front of him was a stranger.
She was dressed in simple clothes, her hair loosely tied at the back of her head, giving her a lazy, easygoing air. Her features were fairly delicate and refined, with a just-right kind of pleasantness that made it easy for people to let down their guard.
Most importantly, she was carrying an insulated lunch container in her hand, and she looked like she was there to deliver food.
Wes froze for a moment, then said, "You're here to deliver food? You've got the wrong bed. Hugh Shaw is next door."
